As the Knicks prepare to embark on their tour of the NBA's three Lone Star State outposts - San Antonio on Tuesday, Houston on Thursday, Dallas on Friday - they confront a task that's large in more than one respect. They confront three of the game's best big men fresh off a game in which they couldn't contain a fourth, Jermaine O'Neal, whose 33 points and 12 boards pushed the Pacers to Saturday's 103-97 victory. One reason: Kurt Thomas, their best interior defender, spent most of his night chasing Ron Artest around the perimeter in the Pacers' small lineup, leaving O'Neal primarily in the hands of Nazr Mohammed before coach Lenny Wilkens double-teamed in the second half. Thomas should see Duncan on Tuesday and Nowitzki on Friday, but that doesn't mean he's going to have any more success than the Knicks had not only against O'Neal, but also on opening night against Kevin Garnett (28 points, 20 rebounds). "It's a chess match out there," Thomas said of guarding such big bodies. "Some nights you're going against a guy who's going to get the ball 20, 30 times inside and we have to double-team. Sometimes you've got to keep him guessing, keep him off-balance." Keeping big men such as O'Neal, Duncan and Yao off-balance usually means keeping them as far away from the rim as possible. As Jerome Williams put it, "We've got to meet them early, play better in transition, don't let them beat us down the court so we can establish position. ... Jermaine O'Neal basically just turned and he's right at the basket. A guy like that, you've got to fight him harder." Williams suggested that was discussed with Mohammed, whose defensive problems offset a 20-point, 15-rebound effort at the other end. In and of his defense, Mohammed said, "It's extremely difficult in a situation like that, especially with what I'm supposed to do helping in the middle and helping out on cutters." Yet, Mohammed isn't nearly as suited physically as Thomas or Michael Sweetney to perform the necessary banging. Hence, the double-team strategy, which the Knicks employed virtually every time O'Neal touched the ball in Saturday's second half, usually sending Stephon Marbury at him. Still, as Wilkens said, even a double-team won't work if the primary defender lets a big man get position too deep. Nowitzki, as more of a perimeter player, will pose a different problem, but by then, the Knicks will be two-thirds of the way through three teams that Wilkens never remembers being this talented at the same time. "Usually there's always two teams," he said, "now it's all three that are pretty darned good." They may not have Jamal Crawford, either, vs. the Spurs as he was labeled questionable Sunday after suffering a whiplash-like injury in a second-quarter collision the night before with Indiana's Stephen Jackson. No matter whom they have, though, the Triangle won't be easy. Only once the past eight times that they played all three teams on one trip did they win as many as two games. The other seven, they never won more than once and got swept three times. On this excursion, though, "You've got some bangers," Marbury said, which makes the Knicks' task even tougher. "Our big guys definitely have to step up and answer the challenge," he said.
