KNICKS STUNNED BY ARTEST RULING

November 22, 2004 -- Kurt Thomas just sat in front of his locker before last
night's Knicks-Cavs game at the Garden with wide eyes. A reporter had just
informed Thomas that Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season for
Friday's fight in Detroit.
"Wow, wow, that's all I can say," Thomas said.
When asked to say more, Thomas continued.
"A year? I love to play the game," Thomas said. "To have to sit out a whole
year, we knew it was going to be a tough decision. That is why David Stern is
the commissioner."
Of all the marquee Knicks, Thomas was the most forthcoming in his thoughts.
Isiah Thomas, a former coach at Indiana, remained silent about his former
players. Stephon Marbury wouldn't answer any questions on the subject, while
Allan Houston provided a tepid response.
"It's very unfortunate," said Houston, who used to play for the Pistons.
"Lines were crossed both ways. It is very unfortunate when that happens —
when fans cross the lines and players have to react."
The Knick with the most significant reaction is the least known.
Jamison Brewer, who was activated before last night in place of Moochie Norris,
said he thought the decision was too harsh. Brewer was a teammate of Artest's
with the Pacers.
"He shouldn't get the whole season," Brewer said. "I mean, I don't know. I
guess they are trying to set an example for players. They are taking a lot of
money out of his pocket with the whole season."
While Artest drew the longest suspension, there were two others that were
double-digit in length. Stephen Jackson got 30 games, while Jermaine O'Neal
received 25.
"None of them was right in no kind of way," Brewer said. "But then again, on
the other hand, you have to look at it in [that] you are trying to take up
for yourself."
Brewer worried that if he were still on the Pacers Friday, he would have
gotten involved, too. Kurt Thomas had similar concerns.
Thomas is thankful he has never been put in the same position that Artest
found himself. While fans have fired plenty of dirty words and vile messages
at him, none has ever hit him with a foreign substance.
So if Thomas were in Artest's high tops in Detroit Friday he does not know
how he would react.
"I don't know what would happen if I were to get a battery or a penny or a
beer thrown on me," Thomas said. "There is no telling how I am liable to
respond. I just hope that never happens."
Brewer said if Isiah Thomas were there, he would have gotten involved.
"To tell you the truth, Isiah would have been there, too," Brewer said.

For the first time this year, Houston might participate in non-contact drills
today at practice.
"I just want to continue to build instead of having peaks and valleys,"
Houston said.
