The Knicks added defensive players during the offseason and spent training
camp focusing on getting better defensively for the upcoming season. Through
seven preseason games, the Knicks looked like a different team from last
season as they held opponents to 95.9 points per game and only allowed teams
to reach 100 points twice.

But for one reason or another, that defensive focus didn’t carry over into
the regular season opener. The good news, however, is the 115-93 loss to the
Heat on Wednesday was only one game in an 82-game season. And there is no
reason for concern just yet as the Knicks enter their second game of the
season Friday in Charlotte at 7 p.m. ET.

“We had a breakdown defensively,” forward Al Harrington said. “We let our
offense affect our defense. When we stopped making shots, we hung our heads
and didn’t have the same energy defensively.”

Missing shots typically is not a reason for a lapse on the defensive end, but
for the Knicks it was in their regular-season opener. Once they started
missing from the field, they began forcing perimeter shots and the result in
turn was easy points the other way for the Heat, who shot 57 percent from the
field and held the Knicks to 37.9 percent shooting.

one game and get better from it.”
The Knicks went back and forth with the Heat through the first 21 minutes
before the Heat closed out the second quarter on a 10-1 run to build a
nine-point halftime lead. Danilo Gallinari, who shot 7-for-13 from long range
and finished with 22 points, was the only player knocking down three’s
consistently for New York, and even his attempts weren’t going in until the
second half when the Knicks trailed by as many as 31.

The Knicks drafted a solid perimeter defender in Toney Douglas and traded for
a shot-blocker in Darko Milicic during the offseason to improve their
defense. Both players have made an impact since training camp opened earlier
this month, and now will look to translate that Friday night vs. Tyson
Chandler, Gerald Wallace and the Bobcats.

“We just have to get better as a group collectively,” Harrington said. “
And we’re going to do that. We’re going to have a good practice and come
out in Charlotte ready to go.”
