Eddie House spent the last two and a half seasons with the Boston Celtics,
winning an NBA championship while becoming one of the league's best pure
shooters and sixth men in the process.
So what?
According to House, that is old news. He is now a New York Knick through and
through, and any nostalgic feelings were pushed aside when his current team
played his old one Tuesday night in Boston.
"I had some great times in Boston, and no one can take that away from me, but
that is in the past," he said. "I am only focused on being a Knick right now,
and I am happy to be here. I am focused on helping turn this team around and
getting as many wins as we can with the games we have left."
In 209 games with the Celtics, House averaged 7.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and
1.3 assists in 18.2 minutes per game. His best season, however, came as a key
reserve for Mike D'Antoni's Phoenix Suns in 2005-06, when he averaged a
career-high 9.8 ppg in helping lead the team to the Western Conference Finals.
"(I've always said) D'Antoni's one of the best guys I've played for," House
said. "He lets you play with freedom. I've talked that up and then I ended up
here so it's kind of funny. It's nice. It could be kind of difficult coming
into a system you don't know, you have to try to pick up the plays and you
are out on the court thinking. But I know the system here. I'm just playing.
He lets you play and that feels good."
It also feels good for House to have The Garden crowd on his side for once,
not rooting against him.
"Knicks fans, they get behind you if you play hard and put a good product on
the floor," he said. "It felt good to hear them out there. Anytime you get
the support of the fans it always feels good. I am one of those guys who
feeds off the energy of the crowd, and I want them to feed off my energy as
well. It's a great thing being here."
Over his 10-year NBA career, House has played for the Miami Heat, L.A.
Clippers, Charlotte Bobcats, Milwaukee Bucks, Sacramento Kings and New Jersey
Nets in addition to his tenure with the Celtics and Suns. Now with his ninth
team, he clearly is no stranger to the league and the storied past each
franchise boasts. That is part of the reason why he is proud to now don the
orange and blue.
"Coming (to the Knicks), at first it feels kind of awkward because I've been
playing for the other team for so many years," House said with a slight smile
across his face. "But coming here, it's a great atmosphere, great fans and a
great history. It is a lot of fun to go out there and play on this stage. No
matter what happens, this is a team that competes hard. I haven't always been
able to say that on some of the other teams I've been a part of, but this
team and these guys, they play hard. That's important. Good things happen
from that."
