Carmelo Anthony was dancing, spinning, hopping and hollering, a
fountain of bravado and joy, a star on a mission, a force
unleashed. The moment suited him.

charged, and Anthony turned them back. And when he had fired the

backpedaled, bounced and bellowed, to whoever was in earshot: “

agreement. There was no sense arguing the point.

Anthony’s shot, with 8.2 seconds left in overtime, was easily his
greatest as a Knick, and it delivered perhaps their biggest
victory this season, a 100-99 win over the Bulls, the N.B.A.’s
best team by record.

“It was mine today,” Anthony said. “They were talking some
trash out there a little bit. In the moment, it’s fun times.”

Anthony and Derrick Rose, the N.B.A.’s reigning most valuable
player, had traded big shots all afternoon. But it was Anthony who
came up with the two biggest: a 3-pointer that forced overtime and
the 3-pointer that won it. He finished with 43 points, his highest
output in 73 games as a Knick and one of his greatest
performances, period.

The victory kept the Knicks (29-27) from slipping into an eighth-
place tie with Milwaukee; instead, it pushed them into a tie with
seventh-place Philadelphia (29-27), which lost to Boston. The
Knicks’ win also left a distinct impression on the Bulls, a
potential first-round opponent in the playoffs. Chicago (43-14) is
currently No. 1 in the Eastern Conference and would play the
eighth-place team.

Shumpert’s stubborn defense on Rose and Tyson Chandler’s timely
rebounding (16).

horrifying for the Bulls. Chicago fell behind by 21 points in the
first quarter, tied the game in the third and took a 10-point lead
in the fourth, only to disintegrate down the stretch. Luol Deng
and Rose combined to miss four straight free throws in the final
34.1 seconds of regulation, when the Bulls had a 91-88 lead.

Had Rose and Deng made even two of those foul shots, the game

runner at the final buzzer.

Rose had missed the previous 12 games because of a groin injury,

shadowed by Shumpert, the Knicks’ exuberant rookie.

The Knicks overcame a horrific shooting performance by J. R. Smith
(6 for 22) and a malaise from beyond the 3-point arc (8 for 34).
They were also outrebounded by 59-47, although Chandler — despite
bruising his right elbow — had the two biggest of the game.

putback. Chandler tapped the ball out, and Smith misfired on a 3-
point attempt. Chandler tapped the ball out again. This time,
Smith got it to Anthony, who calmly nailed the winning shot.

Larry Johnson has returned to the Knicks, as a sort of roaming
ambassador who will work with players and in the front office and
help cultivate the fan base. His official title is basketball and
business operations representative. “I’m fond of New York,
always been,” Johnson said Sunday morning, after his appointment
was announced. He said the job came about through recent
discussions with the Garden chairman James L. Dolan, whom he
called a friend. “Once I approached him, maybe three weeks ago,
he was ecstatic and real hyped about bringing me back,” Johnson
said. This is Johnson’s first job in the N.B.A. since he retired
in 2001, after a 10-year career split between the Charlotte
Hornets and the Knicks. He said his goal was to become a general
manager someday. ...Jared Jeffries returned to the rotation after
missing eight games because of a sore knee. He finished with 6
points and 3 rebounds in 11 minutes. ...Bill Walker, who had left
elbow surgery in early March, was also in uniform, although he is
unlikely to find a role in the Knicks’ crowded rotation.
