Knicks rookie dreaming of being part of slam-dunk contest

Knicks shot-blocking rookie center Mitchell Robinson is preparing to
play his first game Friday in New Orleans in front of family, friends and
former high-school teammates.

But the 7-foot “Cajun Kid’’ has another dream — being in Charlotte during
All-Star Weekend in February. The 20-year-old’s pie-in-the-sky hope is
hitting the daily double — being selected to the Rookie-Sophomore All-Star
Game then competing in the slam-dunk contest.

“It’s crossed my mind,’’ Robinson told The Post after setting the Knicks
’ rookie record for blocks with nine Sunday against the Magic. “I always
wanted to be in one — a dunk contest. If I have a chance, why not go for it.
And if I get selected for that [the rookie-sophomore game], it would be
great, too. It’s a big dream of mine. Maybe I can do both.’’

Robinson, the Knicks’ second-round pick obtained as the last vestige of the
Carmelo Anthony trade, is proving his doubters wrong that he wasn’t ready to
make an impact as a rookie. He sat out a year to focus on the draft after
graduating Chalmette High, located in the New Orleans suburbs, and was
classified as a raw project.

After Sunday’s game, Robinson was already talking about setting the Knicks
overall record for most blocks — 10, shared by Dikembe Mutombo and Joe
Meriweather.
David Fizdale — after watching Robinson’s behind-the-head dunk in Dallas
that had the Mavericks bench celebrating — said of him, “I guarantee if you
put him in the dunk contest, he’ll be a finalist if not win it. He does
stuff where the whole team is: did he just do that? He’s a freak of nature
athletically.’’

All-Star events, “That would be a great accomplishment for his first year in
