55 Ways to Say Goodbye
At the Staples Center on March 28, a fan waved a sign that read, "Goodbye
Michael, Hello Kobe,'' and that set the tone for Kobe Bryant. Bryant scored
55 points, the most in the NBA this season, in what probably was his and the
Lakers' final game against 40-year-old Michael Jordan, who plans to retire
after this season. The Lakers beat the Wizards 108-94. Phil Jackson was
Jordan's coach in Chicago when the Bulls won six titles. On March 28, Jackson
watched Bryant drop 42 points on the Wizards in the first half alone. "That was
an incredible demonstration,'' Jackson said. "It came to a point where there
was that curiosity factor: Was he going to hit 80? I'm sure it went through his
head.'' What was Bryant thinking? "Normally, I would try to control the
offense, but this morning Phil gave me the green light offensively for tonight
,'' Bryant said. Jordan finished with 23 points, 17 in the first half.
