About a month ago, Sixers’ president Rod Thorn dialed up
Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan with a trade
proposition. Would the Magic be interested in trading Dwight
Howard to the 76ers?
Now before anyone falls all over themselves about the idea
that the Sixers were actually talking about a trade for
Howard, the most talented center in the league as well as the
most coveted free agent to hit the market next summer, take a
breath and a pause. The Sixers were never (ever) close to
making a deal for Howard.

But for Thorn, broker of hundreds of deals in his five decades
as an executive in the NBA, the inquiry with Orlando on Howard
was simply a foot in the door. Thorn knew that Howard wanted
to go to Brooklyn or Los Angeles and if the Sixers could wedge
themselves into the mix, the chances of coming away with a
pretty big prize in the end were strong.
But first Thorn needed a way in.

用 Howard 當幌子只是他加入交易的前置作業而已。
他很明顯知道 Howard 只想要去 Brooklyn 或 LA，

不過首先 Thorn 需要先把酒宴的門票搞到手。
“We had approached Orlando about a month ago probably that we
would have some interest in Howard if they saw anything with
us that might look good to them,” Thorn said during a
telephone call on Friday afternoon. “That’s probably about
the time it started. We’ve had different conversations with
them and LA over the last three weeks, and talking about
different things. Bynum came into the conversation with us at
that time. It took some time. It didn’t get out over the
course of a lot of conversations. It just didn’t happen
overnight.
Thorn:

Then, (Andrew) Bynum’s name came up so we pursued that aspect.

Still, it was a tough deal for Thorn and the Sixers to broker.
To begin with, the Sixers were maxed out and right up against
the salary cap after a plethora of off-season moves in which
they acquired Dorell Wright, Nick Young and Kwame Brown,
re-signed Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen, and drafted Maurice
Harkless and Arnett Moultrie. The Sixers had, thought Thorn,
acquired enough assets in the off-season that they could swing
a deal as long as they didn’t take on more salary.

So when Bynum’s name came up in the discussions with the
Lakers and Magic, Thorn jumped. If there is one type of player
that the Sixers have been missing for a long time, it’s been
a big man who could control the paint. With Bynum, Thorn knew
there wouldn’t be a second chance.
所以當 Bynum 的名字出現在湖人與魔術的討論當中時，
Thorn 毅然決然的跳進坑裡面。
如果你說七六人在多年來缺乏了什麼樣的球員，
那一定是一個能夠完全主宰內線的大個子。

“If you have assets, then when these things come around –
and they don’t come around very often when you have a chance
to get a player like Bynum,” Thorn said. “And if you have
assets, you have a chance to be in the ballgame. If you don’
t, you have no chance.”
Thorn:
當你有著各式的資產可以作為籌碼，
而當這樣難得的機會出現的時候(像是能夠得到Bynum)
那才有辦法在這樣賽局當中取得話語權，
如果你沒有這些不同的選項，那你就只能一邊吃土。
Interestingly, the player that gave the Sixers the best chance
to get Bynum wasn’t All-Star and Olympian, Andre Iguodala,
whose salary best matched up with Bynum’s. No, instead the
key player in the deal was the No. 15 pick in last June’s
draft, Harkless.
If Harkless wasn’t in the deal, then Orlando was out. And if
Orlando was out, Howard wasn’t going to the Lakers and Bynum
wasn’t headed to Philly. Yes, it came down to 19-year old
Harkless, who was a senior in high school two summers ago.
一切最有趣的事情是，
Thorn策動這個神奇交易的關鍵，

“A key part of this deal was Harkless because Orlando thinks
very highly of him as we do, too. He was key. If we didn’t
have him, we wouldn’t have been able to make this deal,”
Thorn explained. “It’s imperative in this league and pro
sports to have as many assets as you can and use those assets
to help the team get better. I was loathed to include him in
it. When you look at the bottom line, you’ve got to give up
something to get something. If we didn’t include Harkless in
this deal, we wouldn’t have been able to do this deal. We
know Harkless is going to be a very good player, but Bynum
already is.”
Thorn:
最大的關鍵在於 Harkless。
原因在於魔術與我們一樣對 Harkless 有著很高的期待。
如果我們沒有選中他，那這個交易將永遠不會發生(按:這邊是肯定費城的球探)
當你在職業運動的圈子當中要發動交易的時候，
你手上的商品選項要夠多，才能夠有辦法靠交易讓球隊變得更好。
老實說，我可以告訴你我非常不情願將 Harkless 放入包裹。
看看魔術的底線，如果你不付出，那你將不會得到回報。
只要不放入Harkless，那這交易將不會成交，
但儘管不甘心不情願，重點還是我們相信Harkless未來將會是一個極為優秀的球員，
但是Bynum已經是了。
The Sixers also sent Nik Vucevic and a protected first-round
pick to the Magic, but they got back a veteran shooter in
Jason Richardson. Though Richardson will be a key component to
the Sixers this season, the deal was all about one man for the
Sixers …
Andrew Bynum.
這交易還將 Nikola Vucevic 跟一個未來的第一輪送給了魔術，
但是他們拿回了一個資深射手 Jason Richardson，
雖然普遍認為 Richardson 將會有著一定程度的影響，
但是這個交易重點還是在那個人， A-Train, Andrew Bynum.
Of course there remain several issues regarding Bynum and his
future with the 76ers. He is a free agent when the season ends
and previously he had expressed an interest only in re-signing
with the Lakers. However, Thorn believes that as soon as Bynum
gets to Philadelphia and spends time with coach Doug Collins
and his new teammates, that the Sixers will have a great
chance to re-sign him.
Besides, the Sixers will be able to offer more years and money
than any other team.
當然七六人在未來這年還有一些有關Bynum的問題必需要處理，
像是續約與未來。
他的約將會在這個球季結束後到期，
而他之前只表達與湖人簽下 extension 的興趣。
無論如何，Thorn有著滿滿的信心，
當Bynum見過Doug Collins與他的隊友時，
將會加深他留下來繼續打拼的意志。
至少，七六人還有Bynum的鳥權，

“Our feeling is we will have a very good chance to sign Bynum
for several reasons. Firstly, I’ve had a conversation with
him. He’s very happy about getting traded to us. He thinks we
have a good team and he’s very happy about it,” Thorn said.
“He’s from New Jersey, he’s more an East Coast guy than a
West Coast guy. You never know. Our feeling is he’ll like it
here and he’ll want to continue his career here.”
Meanwhile, there is that one center the Sixers didn’t get,
the one who gave the team a chance to get a foot in the door.
Thorn:
我們的想法是我們有著絕佳的機會跟Bynum簽下長約。
首先，我本人早已在交易當下跟Bynum有過溝通，
他言談之間對於被交易到費城的興奮之情毫無掩飾。
他認為七六人有著優秀的團隊，並且他對此感到興致高昂。

比起西岸的花花綠綠，他對東岸應該更加的舒適。
雖然不能準確的預測未來，但是我們的感覺是：
很很開心來到這裡並且準備好要在這裡延續他的職業生涯。
此時，七六人終於有了個之前他們一直沒有機會擁有的中鋒，
一個能夠給費城擁有內線主宰力量的頂尖中流砥柱。
Did the Sixers ever really have a serious chance to get Dwight
Howard?
“We were never, ever close to anything regarding him at all,”
Thorn said. “It was just, we have an interest and if there’
s anything you see that you might be interested in, please
give us a call.
“That never really got off the ground at all.”
No matter. The Sixers got what they wanted either way.
至於回到交易的另外一個主角，
七六人是否從頭到尾有著任何拿到Dwight Howard的可能？
Thorn:
我們完全沒有任何機會可以得到他。
我們只是對他表示了基本款的興趣，
而如果他對我們有興趣，也許他應該請他自己打個電話過來。
對於Dwight，我們從頭到尾八字連半撇都沒有。
不過這不重要了，七六人已經拿到了他們夢寐以求的回報。
結論：
1) 策動交易的是 Rod Thorn, 不是 Mitch Kupchak
就湖人手上所能供給的資產部位要獨立交易到 Howard 是不可能的。
2) Rob Hennigan 對於拼圖很有興趣，尤其是潛力，
他不想收進Veteran，尤其是不好脫手或不可能在可見的未來留在奧蘭多的。
3) 之所以 Rod Thorn 在選秀多選了 Arnett Moultrie，
並且選上 Moe Harkless，就是為了要讓自己手上的資產部位選擇更加完整
增加交易機會一旦出現時成交的可能性
因此 Spence, Lavoy, Dorell, Nick Young 等人都是為了各種可能而先行準備的
(給球探部門跟養成部門一點credit吧，七六人出品大家用過都說讚)
4) 因此之前 Doug 說要幫 Iguodala 找個下家
這個邏輯應該是先建立在魔術不肯收下 Bynum 甚至 Iguodala 的前提上
因此最後當對於側翼防守與真正的 Top Veteran 有迫切需求的金塊出現的時候
交易瞬間就完成了，就twitter上消息的傳播速度來看，
當金塊一加入，確認金塊輸出給魔術的資產部位後，
交易就馬上成交了。
5) Bynum 本人與 Rod Thorn 早已有所溝通，
而非像某些不負責的消息來源表示的七六人制服組不聞不問，
且七六人教練 Doug Collins 尚未歸國，想必真正出來公開表示意見，
必須等倫敦奧運 Doug Collins 所負責的 NBC 的轉撥工作結束之後
才會開始處理
6) 另外一篇外電，Doug 表示當交易還沒 Official 之前
他沒辦法跟 Iguodala 透漏太多，
但是當交易一完成的時候，他正在播出西班牙與俄羅斯的四強賽
他在中場休息的時候收到他的兒子，Coach K的特別助理，Duke首席助理教練
Chris Collins 就已經跟 Doug 表示 Dre 很好(參看Hanway那篇外電)
另外就其他媒體記者的觀察，
Doug 在對阿根廷賽前美國隊練球時已經初步跟 Iguodala 交換意見
