LeBron James isn't a center, but he'll play one when needed
January 10, 2011|By Ira Winderman, South Florida Sun Sentinel
LOS ANGELES — When Udonis Haslem went down with his potential season-ending
foot injury in November, the whispers began:
Why not LeBron James at power forward for those minutes when Chris Bosh is on
the bench?
Why not? Because Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had bigger plans. He
unleashed them during the latter stages of Sunday's 107-100 overtime victory
against the Portland Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden:
LeBron at center. Marcus Camby, meet LeBron James.
The unorthodox move made it four positions handled for extended minutes by
James this season, when counting the misguided early-season attempt to play
James at point guard.

As Spoelstra said after the Heat extended their road winning streak to 13 and
made it 21 victories in the last 22 games overall, it was something he held
in his back pocket for just the right moment.
With the Heat sluggish for much of Sunday's game, Spoelstra sprung the look
with 2:11 to play in the fourth quarter, with James at center, Bosh at power
forward, James Jones at small forward and Dwyane Wade and Carlos Arroyo in
the backcourt.
The Heat outscored the Blazers 25-11 from there, producing yet another escape
act during this remarkable run from a 9-8 record in late November.
"We've talked about it all season," Spoelstra said of the team's internal
deliberations. "This certainly now is a good sign that we can start to do
that. That might be a way we could use our versatility more."
While it is an approach that not only enabled the Heat to battle back from an
eight-point fourth-quarter deficit, it could have more significant long-term
implications. Without having to utilize a lineup spot for middling middlemen
Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Erick Dampier or Joel Anthony, it could open potential
playing time for Mike Miller, who now has been held out of four of the last
seven games. "It's not going to work every game, but I think it was the right
situation," James said. "Coach made a great call and we made some good plays."
The switch came when Spoelstra inserted Jones for Anthony.
"It's successful because, naturally, they'll leave the small forward on
LeBron and they'll put the power forward on me," Jones said. "When you have
guys like we have attacking the basket, if I'm a stretch four, that means the
power forward has to come out past the 3-point line. So that creates space.
And when you're in a possession game, the more space you have for these guys,
the better."
It could be argued that James actually was playing power forward since Camby
has spent much of his career at that position and the Blazers rarely have
utilized a true center in weeks.
No matter. Wade said James' versatility is keeping the team's outlook fresh,
with Spoelstra able to offer so many lineup twists, beyond playing James
solely at small forward or shooting guard.
"With the height, with the athleticism and also the strength to be able to
play guys, he can play anywhere," Wade said. "I think it was a great
adjustment by our coaching staff. It put another guy who's very athletic
around the basket, where he can rebound the ball."
What the adjustment showed is despite 30-9 dominance in the standings, this
very much remains a team that is evolving. Wade said he had been waiting for
James to be asked to muscle it up inside.
"We felt a couple of times early in the season we could have gotten to it,"
he said. "It was a great move to make the adjustment, because Portland, they
were kind of carving us up there."

James finished with 13 rebounds, matching his season high. Against one of the
league's premier offensive-rebounding teams, that total was almost as
significant as James' 44 points.
"LeBron's proven that he can guard multiple positions," Spoelstra said. "We
felt comfortable enough that he could guard Camby."
As a result, the Heat go into the third stop of this five-game trip,
Wednesday night's game at Staples Center against the Los Angeles Clippers,
one victory from tying the franchise's longest road winning streak, a 14-game
run from Nov. 19, 1996 to Dec. 29, 1996.
"I had to do whatever it took to win," James said. "Coach put me in that
position and it created a mismatch for them, and I was able to use my
athleticism and quickness."
