James Hits Help Button, and Wade Answers
For six consecutive quarters, fate was not only fickle to LeBron James, it
was downright infuriating. James, the self-proclaimed King, had joined Dwyane
Wade in Miami during the summer of 2010 to have a co-star worthy of his royal
presence, but Wade was missing in action when James needed him most — in the
absence of the injured Chris Bosh.
"龍王缺陣後已經連續六節了, 我如此努力拼戰卻得不到回應! 典韋呢? 典韋你在哪裡!
我需要你來幫我阿! 武力90幾的典韋, 我需要你的特技"護衛"來幫我取勝啊阿阿!!"
兩場敗給溜馬後, 自詡為大帝的呂布這樣想著..."難道這就是我decision的宿命嗎??"
Suddenly, James was back to where he was two years ago, soaring solo, and
Miami was on the verge of turning into Cleveland, with more sun and sand.
But whatever ailed Wade and threatened to bring down the Heat disappeared as
suddenly it had mystifyingly appeared. After a Saturday visit with Tom Crean,
his college coach at Marquette who now coaches Indiana University, Wade
shrugged off a poor first half Sunday and, with James, powered the Heat to a
101-93 victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Wade scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half, adding 9 rebounds and 6
assists, and James staged a game-long clinic with 40 points, 18 rebounds and
9 assists. The workmanlike forward Udonis Haslem, who needed nine stitches to
close a cut above his right eye after being elbowed by the Pacers’ Tyler
Hansbrough, chipped in 14 points, helping the Heat to return to Miami for
Game 5 Tuesday night with the series tied at 2-2.
“He’s one of the best players in the world for a reason,” James said of
Wade, who missed seven of his first eight shots and played listlessly as
Miami fell into a quick 10-point hole. “I didn’t say anything to him after
Game 3. I knew he would make an adjustment.”
Whatever people were inclined to believe about Wade, there was circumstantial
evidence to support it. Was the supple body that he has flung around N.B.A.
hardwoods for the last nine years becoming creaky, at 30, too soon? There he
was in the Heat’s postgame locker room, his ankles soaking in ice and with
huge wraps around his knees.
Was his Game 3 outburst at Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra reflective of a problem
deeper than his poor play? The time spent with Crean, referred to by Wade as
a “mentor and a father figure,” included not only some heart-to-heart
conversation but a film session to analyze what was — or was not — working
for Wade.
Wade refused to talk about injuries, saying he is a “no-excuses-type person,
” and with the victory was quick to publicly mend fences with Spoelstra.
“Thought Coach did a great job of getting me in sets that I could be
effective in, and for making me stick with it,” he said. “As a scorer, all
you need is one to go in.”
Wade said a first-half 3-pointer he launched over the long-limbed reach of
the Pacers’ Paul George put him in a more positive frame of mind. In James’
s opinion, it was a backdoor pass that he made to Wade on the left baseline
for a dunk that was a glimpse of what was to come.
No question, the third-quarter rally that James and Wade led was explosive —
or as Wade called it, “beautiful basketball for the Miami Heat.”
“We played off each other well,” he said.
Using high screens to allow both players to shake loose, James and Wade took
turns shredding Indiana’s previously stout interior defense and attacking
the 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert.
In the first half, as he was in Game 3, Hibbert was a formidable presence,
altering shots he could not block and forcing James, in particular, to bang
two short bankers off glass.
“We were more aggressive, made him make athletic plays,” Wade said.
Facing a 61-51 third-quarter deficit, Miami embarked on a 25-5 run in which
James and Wade scored all but the last 2 points. They combined for 28 of Miami
’s 30 points for the quarter, or 12 more than the Pacers.
Two plays exemplified the run. With the Pacers leading, 61-57, Wade
penetrated on one of his trademark zigzag drives. With the rim and Hibbert in
sight, he spotted James running the right baseline and hit him for a
highlight-package dunk.
A couple of minutes later, with Miami in front, 64-63, it was James’s turn
to be the facilitator, with a gorgeous misdirection bounce pass to Wade, to
the right of the rim, for a layup.
By the end of the run, the Heat led, 76-66, but the Pacers were not finished.
George, Darren Collison and Danny Granger, who led the Pacers with 20 points,
cut the deficit to 82-79 before Wade scored on a drive, then on a 15-foot
jumper. James added a putback of a missed layup by Joel Anthony, and Haslem,
in the role of Bosh, added four late baskets to help restore order, if only
by Miami tying the series.
Some might consider James’s performance a vindictive lesson for Lance
Stephenson, who flashed James the choke sign in Game 3 — and, despite
apologizing, he had to be separated from Miami’s Juwan Howard during pregame
warm-ups.
James said Stephenson was not worthy of a response and continued to act cool
in the playoff crucible, relaxing with a book in the locker room after the
game. The calm exterior belied not only James’s impassioned performance but
his mind-set. The book title — “The Hunger Games” — was more like it.
