Q:If you hand't been a footballer, what would you have done for a living?
(Eric, via e-mail)
I don't really know.
I wasn't academic so I'd probably have tried to get a trade behind me.
But from the age of eight I thought I'd be a footballer. By then I was
training with Liverpool and wearing the kit. I was familiar with the
training ground, the people around it and that's when the dream
started that I wanted to play for Liverpool. I did all my school work
and gave it my best, but football was always too big a distraction.
--
Q:Who was your first hero as a kid?
(Liam Anderson, cambridge)
John Barnes. When I first started watching Liverpool he was
the main player, setting up all the goals and scoring world-class ones
himself. He was my favourite, even though he didn't play in a position
I liked. I really admired Gazza too - the first World Cup I watched was
in 1990 when he was on fire.
Away from football, I loved Del Boy from "Only fools and Horses."
I always had it recorded and I still take their DVDs when I go away with
England. I laugh out loud, even though I've watched them over and over.
--
Q:Were you easily the best player in your years?
if not, who was and what's he doing now?
(Marvin Wood, Porsmouth)
I would't say easily the best, but I remember being made captain of
the school which I suppose is a good sign. I certainly didn't treat
my mates like I was the best. My school team were successful: we won
the local cup and got into a national competetion where we did quite
well. A lot of clubs looked at other players in my class. One of my
best mates had a two-year YTS with Tranmere, but then he got released.
--
Q:Is it true that as a YTS player at Liverpool, you were smaller even than
Michael Owen?
(Scott Brummitt, Grimsby)
We were about the same size. It was't until I was 16 or 17 that
I started to grow taller than Michael, but until then we were the same age
and the same build. When we wore Liverpool kits we probably looked the
same too. I'm still very good friends with Michael, he's a great lad.
we know each other inside out.
--
Q:You once went for a trial at Gillingham as a teenager?
Why didn't you join them?
(Rahim, Harrow)
Because that's not true. Just before I signed schoolboy forms with Liverpool
I went around a few clubs: Everton, Man city and Man United. I was
wellcomed at all of them and did quite well in all the trails. They were
after my signature and I've still got the letters from those clubs, but
there was only one club that I was going to sign for.
I felt comfortable at Liverpool and most of my family are Reds.
The club acturally advised me to look at other clubs and to make my own
mind up. That they didn't force me to join them was a good sign.

我第一次看到他
是在2002年的日韓世界盃上
他身披藍白條紋戰袍為永恆的王者阿根廷作戰
靈巧輕盈的身影頂著一頭天真無邪的希臘少年捲髮
