Q:Did you think you'd missed your chance as a footballer when you didn't
quite make it to Lilleshall in 1994?
(Dave Atkins, via e-mail)
Definitely. I thought it was over. When I read the letter, my dad was
saying:"forget about it, don't worry" and Steve Heighway, our coach at
Liverpool, was on the phone telling me that it wasn't the end of the world
and that he'd rather I stayed in Liverpool anyway. He told me that it wasn't
just for football reasons that I'd not going to, but because of other factors
like your size, what you're like around the other players and how you are at
school. But I was convinced that I wasn't good enough and decided just to
play for enjoyment from then on, not to expect a career out of game.
In hindsight, it was maybe the kick up the backside that I needed. I really
wanted to prove them wrong and you do acturally get a chance to play against
the Lilleshall side the following season for your club. Liverpool lost, but
I did well. And I kicked few!

Q:What's the worst individual performance you've seen at any level on football
field?
(Home and away Red, Anfield)
[Laughs] Easy. A good mate called Paul McGratten asked me to come and watch
him play. He'd been on the phonefor three weeks asking me to get him some
boots - and not old ones either! So I got him some Predators and I turned up
to watch him and there were quite a few people there. Before the game he was
doing all the shouts and warming up properly. I thought "I didn't realise he
could play a bit." Then the game started and he was an embarrassment to
himself and his family. I felt humiliated too. It was the worst performance
I've ever, ever seen. I lasted 14 minutes on the sidelines. He blamed it on
the boots being too small. I blamed it on him being shit!

Q:Did Liverpool have any initiation ceremonies for its young players?
If so, what wewe they?
(Smiler, Melbourne)
Yes, we have regular team bonding sessions and the new players have to sing,
either when they sign or break into the first team. I had to sing "Angels"
by Robbie Williams. Do you want me to sing it? [FourFourTwo nods]
Yeah, right! I was allowed to have a couple of beers to settle my nerves.
If you're no good then you get swilled - beer thrown at you.
I managed to only get swilled by a few of them.

Q:Even as a kid, did you realise that the Evans-Houllier experiment would
never to work?
(Mikey Red, via e-mail)
I was a YTS at the time and not in the first team so I wasn't really affected
by it. They started really well but I'm not a great believer in joint
managers because certain situations can lead to confusion. I believe in one
manager saying what goes and sticking by that. When I got into the first team
it was Gerard and he was a very good manager who I really enjoyed working
with.
--
Q:You were injured so many times in your lateteens and early-20s that we
thought you were jinxed. What sorted you out? Didn't Houllier send you to
a French dentist?
(Paul Taylor, Wandsworth)
I dentifitely thought I was jinxed because it seemed that every time a big
game came up I wasn't able to play. The medical people said it was down to
my body still developing and that I wasn't ready to play two or three games
in a week. Houllier advised me to see a French guy, a specialist on back
problems. because that's where the pains were coming from. So I went to see
him once a month and got better as I grew and got stronger physically. I saw
the dentist separately to have my wisdom teeth out. I had all four taken out
at the same time [winces]. It was nasty. One of my worst day.

我第一次看到他
是在2002年的日韓世界盃上
他身披藍白條紋戰袍為永恆的王者阿根廷作戰
靈巧輕盈的身影頂著一頭天真無邪的希臘少年捲髮
