Report: Brendan Rodgers agrees new four-year deal at Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers has agreed a new deal to stay on as Liverpool manager until
at least 2018, according to reports on Tuesday night.
The Liverpool boss’ current contract expires in summer 2015, but has been
rewarded by the club’s owners for the remarkable progress of the club under
him.
Since he swapped Swansea City for Liverpool in 2012, replacing club legend
Kenny Dalglish, Rodgers has lead the Reds from a mediocre side finish eighth
in the Premier League to at least a top three finish this season.
Dominic King of the Daily Mail claims that Rodgers “has yet to put pen to
paper but that is a formality”, whilst Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph
explains:
Although it is yet to be signed, it is understood that the contract in
principle has been agreed which will keep Rodgers on Merseyside until at
least 2018. Unlike the four-year deal he signed on joining Liverpool from
Swansea City two years ago, the final year of this one is not “optional”
depending on his performance. The removal of that safeguard is a symbolic
acknowledgement that John W Henry knows he appointed the right man and wants
him to lead the club into a prolonged new era.
The news comes in the build-up to the final game of the season against
Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday, and amid two disappointing results — defeat
to Chelsea last week and Monday night’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Crystal
Palace.
Just last week, Rodgers spoke of being “sure” over signing a new deal to
prolong his stay at Anfield.
“There is nothing really [planned] until the end of the season, but there is
no doubt that at some point we will agree another deal,” he was quoted by
the Daily Mail as saying. “I am sure of that.”
At the club’s award ceremony on Tuesday night, Rodgers was awarded the
Outstanding Achievement award, much to the delight of the onlooking players,
staff and fans.
