Joe Mauer's batting average climbed to .392 on July 1, before beginning a slow,
steady decline so common to catchers throughout a summer.
After going 2-for-5 in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox, the
Twins star is hitting .360 -- nine points ahead of Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez
for the best mark in the majors.
Now in his third major league season, Mauer, 23, acknowledged that fatigue has
become a factor.
"I'm feeling a little sore," he said. "But I'm sure a lot of people in this
clubhouse are feeling sore."
During at-bats, Mauer can sometimes be seen trying to stretch his back. But
that's not the only issue.
"Everything's stiff," he said. "My back's sore. My hands are sore. My legs --
some days you feel good, some days you feel bad."
Mauer has started 90 games at catcher this season. Last year, when the Twins
were more cautious about his surgically repaired left knee, he started 110
behind the plate.
Manager Ron Gardenhire has a dependable backup in Mike Redmond, but the skipper
has been pining for a third catcher on the roster. The Twins have Chris Heintz
and Shawn Wooten at Class AAA Rochester, and one will join the team when
rosters expand Sept. 1.
"We all know that Joe is going to need days off," Gardenhire said.
And for now, it's not exactly a crisis.
Mauer's worst month of the season was July, and he still hit .293. He is
batting .309 for August, and his overall .439 on-base percentage was still tops
in the majors.
To the untrained eye, it's almost impossible to notice a difference in Mauer's
swing, but he insists his bat speed is slowing.
"It's more of a feel thing," he said. "You have to cheat a little bit to catch
up to a fastball."

的叫Joe Torre！！那是在1971年，以.363獲得，但他那年是擔任3壘手工作；再往前找就
得到1944年，Lou Boudreau 的.327，問題是他這年也只擔任過一場捕手；接下來就是1942
年的Ernie Lombardi，他就是貨真價實的捕手囉，當年以.330拿到打擊王，而這位
Lombardi先生，在更早一點的1938年，就以.342取得過打擊王。
