[消息] Twins designate struggling Humber for assignment
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota Twins made a move in their struggling bullpen,
claiming hard-throwing right-hander Juan Morillo off waivers and designating
Philip Humber for assignment.
Twins relievers threw 597 pitches in their first 11 games, the fifth-most in
the majors. And a lot of those have been hit: The bullpen's ERA is 6.88 in 34
innings entering Friday.
The two most critical roles are stable with All-Star closer Joe Nathan and
Jesse Crain setting him up, but the other spots have been vulnerable. The Twins
were intrigued enough by Morillo's power arm that they were willing to risk his
wildness and expose a former first-round draft pick—one of four players
fetched from the New York Mets in the Johan Santana trade—to waivers. If
Humber is not claimed, the Twins would like to send him to the minors and give
him more time to pitch.
Humber had a 12.46 ERA over 4 1-3 innings, allowing 11 hits and walking four
while striking out four.
“It was a short look, and unfortunately we've got a lot of guys who are out of
options,”general manager Bill Smith said.“Unfortunately for Philip it cost
him right now, but let's see what happens.”
Humber made five appearances out of the bullpen in September. Since arriving in
the January 2008 trade he's been behind a bunch of other young pitchers, but he
struggled this spring after a so-so performance for Triple-A Rochester last
year.
“He's got a great arm,”manager Ron Gardenhire said.
With knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in the long role, the Twins were more in need of
another situational reliever. Morillo came from the Colorado Rockies, who
designated him for assignment a week ago. He hadn't pitched for them this
season.
“We've got good reports on him,”Smith said.“We like him. He's a hard thrower
, and we could use that. He's had some troubles throwing strikes, but we're
going to bring him in and give him a look.”
The Twins helped their bullpen with the waiver wire last year by claiming
left-hander Craig Breslow, who was let go by the Cleveland Indians.
Morillo has made six appearances in the majors, allowing 11 earned runs in 8
2-3 innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. The hope is that pitching
coach Rick Anderson can help him with his control.
“Has his issues, but all power guys do,”Gardenhire said.
