A Major League source familiar with the situation said the Twins have been in contact with Hunter and his agent, Larry Reynolds, about a return to Minnesota. Hunter, who played the first 11 seasons of his 18-year career with the Twins from 1997-2007, also told the St. Paul Pioneer Press he's contemplating signing with Minnesota this offseason and has talked with Twins general manager Terry Ryan about it. "Terry Ryan and I have talked several times, and there's definitely a common interest there, for sure," Hunter told the newspaper. "I would come over to win. All that stuff everybody talks about, 'a great guy in the clubhouse,' that's extra -- that's not No. 1. The No. 1 thing is look at my numbers. They're still the same, one of the most consistent hitters in baseball over my career. ... The only reason you're going to want me is because of my play." The question is whether Hunter, who turns 40 on July 18, wants to play for a club that has lost at least 92 games in each of the last four seasons. Hunter has been to the postseason eight times as a player, including the last two years with the Tigers, but has never won a World Series. Hunter, though, is very familiar with the organization and was a teammate of new Twins manager Paul Molitor in '97 and '98, although Hunter played only in a combined eight games those two years. But Molitor was also around Hunter while serving as Minnesota's bench coach in 2000 and '01. Hunter was also a teammate of new Twins bullpen coach Eddie Guardado from 1997-2003 and both represented the Twins as All-Stars in '02. Hunter hit .271/.324/.469 with 192 homers, 259 doubles and 126 stolen bases in 1,234 career games with the Twins before leaving as a free agent before the 2008 season. Hunter signed a five-year, $90 million deal with the Angels before he joined the Tigers on a two-year, $26 million deal that expired after last season. He hit .286/.319/.446 with 17 homers, 33 doubles and 83 RBIs in 142 games last year. He's five-time All-Star who won nine straight Gold Glove Awards from 2001-09 and won Silver Slugger Awards in '09 and '13. But Hunter began the transition from center field to right field during the 2010 season. If he signed with the Twins, he'd take over in right field with Oswaldo Arcia moving to left field. Hunter, who is known as one of the best clubhouse leaders in baseball, has always talked fondly of his time in Minnesota. His familiarity with the organization, including the front office and Molitor, is one of the key reasons he's considering a return to the Twins. "There are so many reasons," Hunter told the Pioneer Press. "You talk about the love from the fans and the love I have for the fans and the organization, growing up there. I came there as a young boy and came out a man.
