Hi everyone. I just got back from dinner. We went to a Korean barbeque place
in Scottsdale; it was really good.
Last week, I played in the Rising Stars Showcase. It was a lot of fun. I saw
a lot of good players there. I was on the winning team. I don't know what I'm
going to do with the $500 we won. Maybe I'll just eat at some nice
restaurants. Maybe I'll go get some really good sushi.
Like I've said earlier, I really wanted to work on my hitting. I'm hitting
the ball hard, but I can't get any hits. I feel I'm hitting the ball well.
I'm trying to find a hole, but that's baseball. Sometimes you hit it hard but
right at people. I'm trying not to think about it, just hitting the ball hard.
One thing I really wanted to work on was hitting breaking balls, and that's
been going well. My timing is better trying to hit the breaking ball. I've
seen some good sliders and two-seamers here.
I can't really say which pitchers have been the toughest because they switch
so much. Every guy is pitching one inning, so it's hard to know who the
pitchers are. We have to learn fast how a pitcher is pitching. Each time,
there's a new guy we have to figure it out fast.
I've liked watching the other shortstops here in Arizona. Brendan Ryan is
very good. I played against him in the Florida State League last year. He can
hit, too. Troy Tulowitzki, he's a big guy. He's got a very good arm. He's got
good power at the plate. On my team, Matt Tolbert's got pretty good hands and
he's a really good hitter, too. I try to learn things from him. I hope he can
learn something from me, too.
Playing for Mesa, I've played with Eric Patterson as my double-play
combination a lot. He's very good, but it hasn't always been easy. I've
played with Tony Abreu in the Dodgers system the last four years, so with
Eric, he's a new guy. It's hard to get to know each other on the field
sometimes. So the timing was a little weird, but we're getting better.
I have to admit, I am starting to get tired. I've never played this many
games in one year. With the World Baseball Classic, training for that, Spring
Training, playing for Jacksonville, the playoffs and then coming here, I must
be way over 160 games. I'm not going to get much rest once the Fall League is
over. The Asian Games are coming up in December and I'm going to play for
Taiwan then.
XD)
Let me answer some of your emails now.
To you, a player who is only one step away from the Majors, what is the No. 1
problem or obstacle in terms of getting yourself into the Majors? Is it still
a technical thing or more a mental thing? --Sue, Taiwan
The main thing is hitting, but you need to get better at everything to play
in the big leagues. You need to run, you need good hitting and you need the
defense, too. I need to work on everything. I'm not a power hitter, but I
want to hit for a good average. Maybe I'll hit in the second-hole, so I need
to be good at bunting and moving runners over. That's my job, so I want to be
good at it.
Do you have any funny or embarrassing things in America? Since English is not
our native language, we might have many funny things in our American life.
--Dean
I do have one funny story. About two years ago, I was playing in Columbus. My
hitting coach asked me if every Chinese guy knew kung fu. He heard every
Chinese guy knew kung fu. I said, "Yeah." At first, he believed me. My
hitting coach was black, so I said to him, "Yes, every Chinese guy knows kung
fu, just like every black man knows how to rap." I tried to make a joke.
Everybody laughed.
