BriSox pick up first victory of season
Bobby Thigpen got his first taste of victory as manager of the Bristol White
Sox from an unexpected source Friday in Bristol’s 8-0 win over the Johnson
City Cardinals.
After using no fewer than 12 pitchers in the BriSox’s first three losses,
Thigpen decided to go with newcomer Po-Yu Lin at Howard Johnson Field in
Johnson City. The stout Taiwanese import did not disappoint.
In six scoreless innings, the 20-year-old Lin allowed just four hits and no e
arned runs while striking out seven. The brash right-hander attempted to
intimidate batters with numerous brush-back pitches which may have made
Cardinals batters uneasy.
"We had no idea how he was going to do," Thigpen said. "He got in a couple bad
situations and battled his way out, so after tonight we know that he’s got the
capability to do that."
Lin received plenty of run support early Friday, as the BriSox jumped out to a
4-0 lead by the second inning. Kyle Hash followed left fielder Sergio Morales’
game-opening RBI with a two-run single to right field that put the Sox up 3-0
in the top of the first. Hash led the BriSox with two RBIs.
"The run support helped me be a lot more confident in myself knowing that we
were so far ahead," Lin said through an interpreter. "I didn’t expect to do so
well in my first start. I pretty much just do what the coaches tell me to do
and work with the players around me, and it worked well."
The BriSox assailed Cardinal starter Senger Peralta with seven hits and six
runs in 3 1/3 innings. Sox batters added eight runs to their season total of 14
in three games, capitalizing on three Cardinals errors.
After Lin retired the side with just six pitches in the first, leadoff batter
Kent Gerst got the party back underway with his first career home run in the
top of the second to extend the BriSox lead to 4-0.
"We said before the game that this was a game to win to break the losing streak
and we came out big," Gerst said. "I was kind of mad about the strikeout in the
first inning, so I just unloaded on it."
Despite the overall improvement, the BriSox left 12 runners on base and
committed one error in the win.
Wilmer Rojas came on strong in three innings of relief, allowing just two hits
and no earned runs to go along with five strikeouts. Thigpen, who holds the
single season MLB records for saves with 57, was proud of his teams pitching
performance on the evening.
"The key to me is pitching and defense," Thigpen said. "We got some great
pitching tonight and that normally wins games."
