FORT MYERS, Fla. - From general manager Theo Epstein on down,
executives, scouts, and coaches in the Red Sox organization praise the
athletic ability of 21-year-old Che-Hsuan Lin.
Lin is a superior center fielder, having both a strong arm and the
ability to chase down balls in the gaps. He has stolen 59 bases in his
last two seasons of Single A ball, and in his native Taiwan, he was a
national champion sprinter and high jumper.
The question is whether Lin will become enough of a hitter to get to the
major leagues.
The progress he has made at the plate was evident yesterday as he went 2
for 4 with two RBIs to help the Sox to a 15-0 victory against
Northeastern in the first game of a split-squad doubleheader.
"The beginning of spring training was a struggle a little bit, taking
BP and working with the hitting coaches," Lin said through
interpreter Mickey Jiang. "Now it feels good and I'm ready."
Lin was the MVP of the 2008 Futures Game at Yankee Stadium, hitting a
two-run home run to help the World team to a 3-0 victory over the US
team. He added to his resume by being named to the Carolina League All-
Star team last season. But through three years in the minors leagues,
Lin has hit .255 with 16 home runs.
"I think I am improving," said Lin, who has worked with sports
psychology coach Bob Tewksbury about maintaining his confidence at the
plate. "Every year I feel like I'm taking steps. Being in the major
league camp helps because you can learn from the best players.’’
For one day, at least, Lin's confidence won't need any help.
"It's a nice way for a young kid to get his first chance to swing a
bat in this atmosphere," Sox manager Terry Francona said. "I'm sure
he had a little heartbeat going."
