Admit it, you're beginning to believe that something extraordinary is going to
happen this season. I mean, if the dog days of August didn't pull the plug on
the amazing stories taking place in Tampa Bay and Chicago, how can September
trip up the Rays and Cubs?

their respective divisions on Labor Day. In a month that also saw baseball
implement instant replay and Davey Johnson's Team USA take home a bronze medal
at the Summer Games in Beijing, the Cubs and Rays and their bids to make
baseball history remained in the spotlight as we moved into September.

September could also see an emotional farewell unless the Yankees make a

1.Mr. August: Manny Ramirez, Dodgers. Ramirez was already a star before he
joined the Dodgers, but he has really lit up Los Angeles since his arrival. His
.415 batting average, nine homers and 25 RBIs ranked among the top five in the
Major Leagues for August. His on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.244 led the
Majors.

4.World Series (in August) winner: The Cubs led the Major Leagues in numerous
categories during August, and not surprisingly ended the month with the best
record in the big leagues. How good were they? Consider the Astros, who had
one of the finest months in franchise history, going 21-9. And yet despite
that impressive showing, the Astros actually did not gain in the standings on

5.August's Child: Armando Galarraga, 26, has been a bright spot in Detroit's
disappointing season. The rookie right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.66 ERA in
August to improve to 12-4 and 3.17 on the season. Since the All-Star break,
Galarraga, who was acquired from the Rangers on Feb. 4 for Michael Hernandez,
is 5-1 with a 3.02 ERA.

6.Who the heck? If you follow the Cardinals, you know who Chris Perez is, but
the 23-year-old right-hander has been introducing his arsenal to National
League hitters after an impressive rise through the Minors. He has really
blossomed since taking over the closer role recently. Perez did not allow an
earned run in August and converted all six save opportunities.

7.August management: Joe Maddon, Rays. A critical month for the Rays, and
despite injuries to left fielder Carl Crawford, third baseman Evan Longoria
and closer Troy Percival, they not only held on to first but actually added to
their lead with a 21-win August. Maddon kept the team on track and his gutsy
game calls -- like ordering an intentional walk of Josh Hamilton with the bases
loaded -- continued to pay off for the surprising Rays.

8.The injury bug: The three injured Rays had plenty of company, as several

and Maicer Izturis of the Angels; Geoff Jenkins of the Phillies; Brad Penny of

9.August's magic moment: Marlon Byrd's walk-off grand slam with two outs in the
ninth inning lifted the Texas Rangers to a 9-5 come-from-behind victory over
the Yankees on Aug. 4. It was the Rangers' third walk-off victory in 11 games.
"It's an incredible feeling," Byrd said after getting the traditional beer
shower in the clubhouse. "A win like this, it's a wonderful feeling."
