This year we saw two no-hitters, and : both provided a unique story. Jon Lester capped off an amazing calendar year : with his no-hitter in May, months after pitching the deciding game of the 2007 : World Series and surviving a battle with cancer. The Griffey moment was especially memorable, because after his : numerous injuries in the early part of this decade, it looked like he may never : reach the 600 Home Run plateau after looking like a lock to break the all-time : mark early in his career. Griffey's numbers on the year weren't great, but the : seeing him finally hit #600 after his bad luck with the injury bug made up for : it in many fans' eyes. Ramirez quickly fell out of favor in Boston, leading to : the team trading him to Los Angeles. While Manny has been a pain in the butt : over the past couple years, there's not many other hitters who could've gone to : a league in which he's never played and put up the numbers that he did. While in the : long run it was pretty insignificant -- he didn't even win the thing -- his : record-breaking first round was the culmination of the Hamilton media hype and : had people who weren't even baseball fans talking about his comeback. To be : fair, the most impressive thing Hamilton has done likely happened last year, : when he was a Rule 5 player jumping from the low minors to the Majors and put : up a line of .292/.368/.554 in an injury-shortened season. Usually you would expect a : big market team like New York or Boston to acquire him at the deadline, but it : was the Milwaukee Brewers, playing in baseball's smallest media market, that : came through and dealt for the hefty lefty days before the All-Star break. : Sabathia proceeded to stampede through the National League, nearly throwing a : no-hitter in Pittsburgh, tossing 7 complete games, and posting a 1.65 ERA in 17 : starts. Milwaukee was a wildcard contender before the Sabathia deal, but his : incredible run allowed the Brewers to stay afloat while they struggled through : the month of September. Ned Yost was fired with just a couple weeks left in : the season, and Sabathia went on to make his last three starts of the year on : short rest, culminating in the wildcard-clinching game in which he again went : the distance. Sabathia finally broke down from the overuse in the playoffs, : but you could argue that many Milwaukee fans were just happy to see their team : in the NLDS after a 26-year absence from October baseball. : 5. Yankees miss the playoffs for first time since 1994 : While the Brewers made the playoffs for the first time in ages, the Yankees : missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. The failure to make : the postseason wasn't as much about playing poor baseball as it was playing in : an impossibly tough division -- Boston finished second and won the wildcard : with 95 wins. New York, who finished at 89-73 would've won the AL Central if : they didn't have the misfortune of playing in the same division as Boston and : Tampa Bay. While the TV ratings may not have reflected it, it was nice to see : some fresh faces in the AL playoff bracket, and we all waited in anticipation : to see how the Yankees would respond (we now know that response involves paying : out over $400 million this offseason). With Tampa Bay and Boston looking just : as strong heading into next season, the Yankees loading up on All-Star talent, : and teams like Toronto and Baltimore continuing to improve, the AL East should : be even more fun to watch next season. 4.洋基94年以來首度沒闖進季後賽洋基從94年以來第一次沒打進季後賽，跟酒鬼形成強烈對比。沒打進季後賽不代表洋基表現很糟，只能說是這區太硬--看看紅襪用95勝拿到外卡大概你就懂了。洋基89勝的成績甚至可以拿下美聯中區呢(科科)。雖然收視率可能沒有反映出來，不過能在美聯季後賽看到新面孔是件好事。同時，我們也期待洋基會如何應對(目前為止已經砸下超過4億美金搶人了) 當光芒跟紅襪看起來在下一季仍然很有競爭力的同時，洋基似乎想把所有大魚都抓進自己的球隊。而像藍鳥金鶯"這種球隊"也在進步當中，美聯東區下季激戰保證精彩!! : 3. 100 years...and counting : The Cubs were arguably the best team in baseball in 2008, but again failed to : win a game in the playoffs. You'll have a hard time finding a better example : of October being a complete crapshoot. Forget all the talk about Bartman and a : curse -- the Cubs couldn't have picked a worse time to get cold. While it's : true the Dodgers were a different team once Manny came to town, the Cubs still : had no business losing a series to an 84-win team, let alone getting swept. : The Cubs will always be competitive due to their ability to outspend every : other team in their division, but you have to start worrying about their : current window closing -- the impending sale of the team has basically : prevented them from making any moves this offseason other than re-signing their : own players, and they have a lot of money tied up in the likes of Alfonso : Soriano and Carlos Zambrano in the future. They should be back in the playoffs : in 2009, but the National League may not be as ripe for the taking next season. 2.100年了...還要多久? 小熊可能是2008年最棒的棒球隊，但是在季後賽仍然一勝難求。很難找到比小熊隊更讓人難以捉摸的球隊了!忘記所有關於Bartman跟什麼狗屁魔咒的事吧!小熊已經不能變的更糟糕了。不可否認，道奇在Manny加入之後完全判若兩隊，但是小熊仍然沒有理由輸掉系列戰，更別說被橫掃。靠著比同區其他隊伍更會灑錢的功力，小熊年年有希望，年年都失望。但是現在狀況有點不一樣了，即將出售的小熊讓FO只能留住現有的球員，而無法簽下FA或是交易。同時，小熊未來薪資裡有很大一部分要出給大牌球星，像是 Soriano跟大Z。他們09年應該還可以打進季後賽啦，不過下一季的國聯可能就沒這麼好打了。 : 2. Philadelphia has a championship winner : Outside of Seattle, you'd have a hard time finding a sports city more down on : its luck than Philadelphia. This year the likes of Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, : Ryan Howard, and Pat Burrell helped erase so many painful sports memories by : racing through the playoffs and capturing the city's first major sports : championship since 1983 and its first World Series title since 1980. Even to : an outside observer, the Phillies were a likable team -- by all accounts, Chase : Utley and Ryan Howard seem like great guys, and Brad Lidge's surprise : turnaround was especially good to see given how his time in Houston quickly : went downhill. We can only imagine how this will intensify the Phillies/Mets : rivalry, too -- the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry was always fierce, but became even : more intense after the Red Sox finally broke through and won a title. Little : did we know that the team would get off to a hot start and never look back, : even adding youngsters like Evan Longoria along the way to further improve the : team. By the end of the season, the Rays had improved upon last season's : record by 31 games and locked up their first ever AL East title. In a division : filled with big spenders -- even the bad teams like Baltimore overspend in that : division -- it was nice to see the small-market Rays stick it to the big boys : with a roster of pre-arbitration players and relative unknowns.
