LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw pitched a four-hit shutout, slugged his first homer and granted two curtain calls to a sold-out Opening Day crowd at renovated Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers beat the defending World Series champion Giants on Monday, 4-0. Kershaw's homer off reliever George Kontos was the first of his career. It came on the first pitch of the inning and warranted the curtain calls from a crowd that saw Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax throw out the first pitch. Carl Crawford followed with a double down the left-field line and Mark Ellis popped up a bunt that diving catcher Buster Posey couldn't catch for a single that put runners on the corners. A wild pitch by Santiago Casilla brought home Crawford with an insurance run, and Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis each followed with RBI groundouts. Kershaw is the first pitcher to homer on Opening Day since Joe Magrane did it for the Cardinals vs. the Reds on April, 14 1988. The only other Dodgers pitcher to accomplish the feat was Don Drysdale, who did it against the Cubs on April 11, 1959, and again vs. the Mets on April 12, 1965. The only other pitcher to homer and pitch a shutout on Opening Day was Bob Lemon for the Indians on April 14, 1953, against the White Sox. The Dodgers had a trio of earlier scoring opportunities against Giants ace Matt Cain. With runners on first and second and one out in the first inning, Carl Crawford was thrown out trying to steal third base by Posey to derail that chance. In the fourth, a sharp one-out single by Adrian Gonzalez and an infield single by Ethier (not charged by shortstop Brandon Crawford) went to waste when Luis Cruz fouled out and A.J. Ellis popped out. Mark Ellis led off the bottom of the sixth with a fly down the right-field line that Hunter Pence lost in the sun and it fell for a double. Matt Kemp grounded out softly to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, with Ellis holding. Adrian Gonzalez took a called third strike and gave plate umpire Gary Darling a look of disapproval. Then Cain froze Ethier with another called third strike to end the inning. The only threat Kershaw faced was in the first inning when Pablo Sandoval singled with two outs and was wild-pitched to second. But Kershaw struck out Posey to end the inning.
