Exclusive: Rooney talks to ManUtd.com

Rooney: I Want To Bring Title Glory Back To United
Wayne Rooney was finally unveiled as a Manchester United player on Wednesday
as he came face-to-face with the world football media at Old Trafford.
The 18-year-old was paraded alongside his new manager Sir Alex Ferguson, plus
the man who was largely responsible for striking the deal that brought the
former Evertonian to Old Trafford, chief executive David Gill.
Dressed in a smart black suit and tie, the young England star answered every
question that was fired his way with the kind of calm authority he shows in
front of goal.
After posing for the traditional 'new signing' photographs on the pitch with
Sir Alex, Rooney spoke exclusively to ManUtd.com about life at Old Trafford.
The teenager insists he is relishing the huge challenges that lie ahead of him
and says he is determined to help United regain their grip on the Premiership
crown...
Firstly Wayne welcome to Old Trafford. What have the last 24 hours been like
for you?
“Very tiring! We spent most of Tuesday trying to sort the deal out, before
eventually getting it done, and I’ve been training this morning. So it’s
been a tiring 24 hours but it’s all been worth it.”
Does it feel like a dream come true now you're finally a Manchester United
player?
”Yes, and I’m relieved more than anything that we managed to get it sorted
before the transfer deadline. I’m just happy to be at a club like United and
I’m determined to do well.”
Do you feel like the price-tag is weighing down on your shoulders at all?
”The price-tag’s between the two clubs really. I’m just so happy to be a
United player and I want to just go out there and do what I can for the club.”
After your move to United had been confirmed, you went out and met the hundreds
of fans who had been waiting for you all day. What kind of an experience was
that like for you?
“It was brilliant. I’d been upstairs at Old Trafford waiting to sign my
contract for about five hours and I could see all the fans waiting outside.
When I went out later on it was really noisy and they were all singing my name.
It was just brilliant to get such a great reception when I’d just signed for
United.”
Have you got a message for the millions of United supporters out there?
”I think the fans are going to expect a lot from me, as they should do. I just
want to get into the team and show all of them what I can do, and hopefully
bring the title back here this season.”
How much are you relishing the prospect of lining up alongside the players at
this club, particularly the other strikers?
”I’m very excited. There’s a really good squad of players here who are all
top players. I hope I can gel in as quickly as possible and become one of
those players as well.”
What are you hoping to learn from the other lads?
”They’ve all got great experience of playing at the top level and playing in
the Champions League. So I think I’ll be able to learn a lot from them and if
I need any advice, hopefully I’ll be able to go and speak to them as well.”
Sir Alex Ferguson is obviously renowned for nurturing young players and getting
the best out of them. What are you hoping to take from him?
”He’s worked with a lot of young players over the years and he’s always got
the best out of those players. Hopefully he can get a lot more and the best out
of me over the next few years.”
You’ve talked about your desires to play in the Champions League, but what
kind of challenge do you think you’ll face in Europe?
”I think it’ll be a different type of challenge and a difficult one too
because you’ll be up against the top players in Europe. But that’s what every
player relishes; they want to challenge themselves and play against the best
players, and hopefully we can go out there and win it.”
How much will you draw on the experience you gained at Euro 2004?
”That was the thing that really made my mind up about leaving Everton to be
honest. Going out to Portugal was a big experience for me and after doing as
well as did out there, I felt that I had moved my game on and I wanted to be
playing in the Champions League.”
How have you changed as a player and a person over the last 12 months?
”I think I’ve changed a lot as a person on the field and off the field.
I’m much more mature than I was 12 to 18 months ago, but that all comes with
playing the game. Hopefully I can keep my head down, do my job well and go out
and do my best for Manchester United."
The manager’s already said that he could use you in a number of different
positions in the team. Where would you ideally like to line up?
”I’m an attacking player and I like to run at defenders, so I’m comfortable
playing either behind two forwards or one forward. It doesn’t matter to me -
I’m comfortable with either really.”
Playing alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo is going to
provide you with some good service into the box. Having experienced playing
with similar kinds of quality players for England, how important is that
service to a striker?
”The better the service you get played into you, the better you’re going to
do. Playing with quality players means you get more of the ball much earlier
which allows you to find space. So the better the service, the better you'll
play.”
You and Paul Scholes formed a very good understanding during Euro 2004. How
much are you looking forward to linking up with him again at Old Trafford?
”Very much so. Scholesy’s a great player and if we can link up well this
season, I think we could be unstoppable.”
Finally Wayne, what are you hoping to achieve with the team over the next few
years at United?
”We’ve got some good young players at the club and providing we can all grow
together in the team, I think we'll eventually come good again. It’s a big
challenge for us and we might not win the league this season; it might take two
or three years. But I really think we’re capable of matching both Arsenal and
Chelsea.”
Wayne Rooney was talking exclusively to ManUtd.com's Gemma Thompson.
