Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs is hoping his team can hand Chelsea the
ir first defeat of the Barclays Premier League season.
The 38-year-old Welshman knows what it takes to win a league title having be
en a key man in United's success in recent years.
And he also knows his side cannot allow Chelsea to stretch their lead at the
top of the table.
Giggs said: "We recognise we cannot afford to let Chelsea get too far ahead
in the title race.
"They are four points in front and have got off to a good start so it is a b
ig game."
Giggs also believes it is important to start the game well - something Unite
d have struggled to do in all competitions this season having fallen behind
eight times in 12 matches.
"You cannot go throughout a season and keep going behind and having to rely
on the lads up front to score the goals," he said.
"It is something we have looked at and are still looking at.
"It happened again against Braga but against Chelsea if we go behind it will
be tough to come back."
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in their
Champions League game at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech is refusing to panic, though, and believes his side can
draw on what they experienced in Ukraine to help them beat United.
He said: "It is good that this happened now because Manchester United is a s
imilar team who play on the counter-attack away from home.
"We will play more or less the same kind of side as Shakhtar - we didn't dea
l with it well so hopefully this will serve as a lesson for the weekend."
Another standout fixture will take place at Goodison Park, where Everton fac
e Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
Everton are already six points and eight places better off than the Reds, an
d defender Phil Jagielka believes that has given this derby a different feel
to others he has played in.
The England international said: "I think it's a strange one. Normally we are
desperate to beat them just because it's Liverpool.
"This time we would love to beat them but we have to think about keeping our
selves up towards the top of the league."
Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool will be looking to pick up where they left off in
the league after they managed only their second victory of the season again
st Reading last weekend.
Arsenal will host basement side QPR as the Gunners look for a positive end t
o a dismal week which saw them lose to Norwich and Schalke.
Champions Manchester City will have something of a point to prove following
their European defeat at Ajax in midweek.
Manager Roberto Mancini admitted afterwards his side "will need a miracle" i
f they are to progress through the Champions League group stages, but attent
ion turns back to domestic matters on Saturday evening with the visit of Swa
nsea.
Norwich defender Michael Turner admits his side's trip to Aston Villa has pl
enty of added incentive as they prepare to come face to face with former bos
s Paul Lambert for the first time since he left Carrow Road in the summer.
The Canaries go into the game on a high after beating Arsenal and Turner sai
d: "We have not talked about it too much, but it adds extra spice to the gam
e that Paul Lambert was here last year.
"But we won't be distracted in any way. A lot will be made in the media abou
t the Paul Lambert thing, but we just want to get the points on the board. I
t's important that we build on the good win we had last week."
Reading boss Brian McDermott admits he is running out patience at his side's
inability to claim their first top-flight win of the season and says things
must change, starting with their home clash against Fulham.
McDermott, who may recall Adam Federici in goal, said: "We can't keep talkin
g about good performances and getting draws or beaten. It's time for us to g
et the results that the performances have merited."
Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill hopes Lee Cattermole has learned the lessons
from his recent three-match ban as he returns from suspension for the Black
Cats' trip to Stoke.
O'Neill, who could also recall Phil Bardsley, said: "Lee has missed the last
few games and it is fair to say we have missed his drive. As the captain, h
e is a good leader and I think that part has been missed a little bit."
Wigan and West Ham both have injury concerns as they prepare to meet at the
DW Stadium, with the Latics set to give Ryo Miyaichi a late fitness test whi
le Ricardo Vaz Te remains sidelined for the Hammers.
On Sunday, apart from the Merseyside derby, West Brom bid to bounce back fro
m last weekend's unlucky defeat to City as they go to Newcastle, while strug
gling Southampton meet Tottenham at St Mary's.
