It was believed that there were few decisions for skipper John McLaren to make. But McLaren has spoken highly of several players that began the month as afterthoughts. Yung Chi Chen has impressed not only McLaren but the entire coaching staff from hitting coach Jeff Pentland to bench coach Jim Riggleman. He's comfortable in the batter's box, has shown a consistent swing to go with good pitch recognition and plate coverage, and makes the pitcher work. I just don't see any way McLaren has the berries to send him to Triple-A Tacoma. He could serve up six hits in two innings and walks four batters, but Ramirez is being protected right now, and it's not by Bill Bavasi. ============================================================================= Early Returns on Prospect Assignments: We're still nearly four weeks away from having a good idea what the minor league rosters are going to look like but there are some early signs. It's fairly clear that the Tacoma Rainiers roster is likely to consist of pitchers Ryan Feierabend, Robert Rohrbaugh, Doug Fister, Cesar Jimenez, Steve Kahn, Mark Lowe, Jon Huber, Phillip Barzailla, Jose de la Cruz, Joe Woerman and possibly Jake Woods, Roy Corcoran, Rich Dorman, Cha Seung Baek, Sean White and even Horacio Ramirez. The outfield is likely to consist of Jeremy Reed and/or Charleton Jimerson, Wladimir Balentien, Bronson Sardinha, Prentice Redman and possible Mike Morse and Bubba Crosby. The infield is likely to have Bryan LaHair and Matt Tuiasosopo at the corners, with Ronnie Prettyman in the mix as well, and Tug Hulett, Chen, Mike Kinkade and Oswaldo Navarro rounding out the most likely candidates. It appears shortstop Carlos Triunfel could head back to High Desert where he finished 2007, with defense being a major focus for the 18-year-old Dominican... Outfielder Michael Saunders is probably headed for Double-A West Tennessee, but some of the other players have said that they would not be shocked if Saunders started the season in Tacoma... Unless right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx can satisfy the organization with his still-being-messed-with mechanics and shows no signs that his arm is less than 100 percent, there is a chance he could be sent back to the California League, though a representative of the club's Player Development department recently doubted that scenario. "He's paid his dues down there, and unless he's hurt, he'll move on. He's a worker."
