Lowe has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 5 (retro to May 3) with lower back disc inflammation. The Mariners Medical Director Dr. Ed Khalfayan and the training staff have determined that Lowe has not improved after undergoing a trial of epidural injections and rehabilitation for his lumbar disc herniation, the M's said. He is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, June 15 at Harborview Medical Center, performed by Dr. Carlo Bellabarba. The surgery is a microdiscectomy. Lowe, 27, was 1-3 with a 3.48 ERA (4 ER, 10.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances this season. His last appearance was May 2 against Texas. Obviously, this is a big blow to the Mariners' bullpen. Lowe served a valuable setup role, and could have closed if they decided to trade David Aardsma. Or he could have been a trade chip himself. Now the fallback closing candidates are Brandon League, who has had mixed results this year, and perhaps Chad Cordero, who was an All-Star closer before shoulder surgery. But on a personal level, you have to feel for Lowe, who went through an arduous comeback from serious elbow surgery in 2006 that threatened his career.
