Rick Williams, the Marlins' former minor league pitching coordinator and current special assistant to the general manager with the Devil Rays, scouted Saturday's 9-0 Marlins win over the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium. Olsen started and pitched two scoreless innings with no hits, a walk and no strikeouts. "A four-pitch walk with two outs in the first inning," Olsen said. "That's the only problem there was. My arm feels better now than it did at any point last year." The Marlins are keeping tabs on Tampa Bay as well, assigning pro scout Gene Watson to watch Gathright. None of this means a trade of Olsen for Gathright is in the works. But the Marlins are willing to trade one of their surplus young pitchers for an affordable center fielder with plenty of upside to add to their nucleus. Any such trade would most likely occur late in spring training. Gathright is among several outfielders the Marlins would consider. Others who may be available: Jeremy Reed, Endy Chavez, Freddy Guzman,Luis Terrero, Tike Redman and Willy Taveras. If the Marlins want to splurge, Cincinnati's Wily Mo Pena is signed for $1.25 million and will be arbitration-eligible the next two seasons.
