Burke Badenhop was originally selected in the 19th round of the 2005 draft
and wasn’t seen as much of a prospect. That didn’t stop Burke from opening
eyes in short season Oneonta where he posted a 6-4 record with a 2.92era and
a 1.23whip in 77 innings of work. The following year, Badenhop took home the
Tigers minor league pitcher of the year award after going 14-3 with a
2.84era and a 1.18whip in 171 innings in the Midwest League.
At 6'5, 220lbs, he looks to have the build of a power picher, but he throws
mid to high 80’s and is not overpowering. He is more about finesse than
power. He has a high 80s sinker that doesn’t miss many bats, but it does
allow him to get many groundballs. Badenhop also has a four seamer that can
reach 92mph, but it’s his sinker and changeup combo that he relies on. Even
though neither of those pitches grade out as a plus pitch, he gets results.
Making 23 starts in High A Lakeland, Burke went 10-6 with a 3.13era and a
1.21whip. He saw a late season promotion to AA Erie and went 2-0 with a
1.45era and a 0.59whip in 18.2 innings. Badenhop pitched with the Peoria
Saguaros in this year’s Arizona Fall League. In 10 games, all out of the
bullpen, he went 2-2 with a 3.24era and a .292baa in 16.2 innings of work.
His ceiling is that of an inning’s eater in the back end of rotations. The
Marlins may consider moving him to the bullpen, but at this point, he is more
than likely going to be a starter in AAA Albuquerque for 2008.
