He will cost basically what Miguel Cabrera would have cost for the next couple of seasons in arbitration. To acquire him would cost young prospects or established Major League players, which the Marlins should be keeping to build around. My point is you can't match Cabrera's numbers with Lowell's. Ultimately, the success of the home team boosts up the fan base, not who the home team is playing. The key all along with the Marlins has been having their own place to call home, and finally grow roots. Dealing popular players certainly is unpopular. That said, finalizing a new stadium will be the biggest off-field news in the history of the franchise. Because in doing so, it secures the long-term future of the organization, plus it will provide a consistent revenue stream to field more competitive teams. Now, just because the team is on the brink of a new building doesn't mean it will lock up all your favorite players for the remainder of their careers. There is high turnover on all teams, including the Yankees and Red Sox.
