Marlins' No. 1 pick agrees to deal
SEATTLE - The Marlins have agreed to terms with first-round draft pick Kyle
Skipworth pending a physical, according to a source who has spoken with club
officials.
Skipworth, a catcher out of Patriot High School in Riverside, Calif., whom
the Marlins selected sixth overall, is on his way to South Florida where he
is expected to undergo a medical workup today. An announcement could come as
soon as Friday.
Skipworth should be in uniform with the Marlins' Gulf Coast League rookie
ball affiliate sometime this weekend.
Second round pick Brad Hand, a left-hander out of Chaska (Minn.) H.S., will
be joining him. According to the Chaska Herald, Hand has agreed to a $760,000
signing bonus and will take a physical on Thursday in Jupiter as well.
Like Hand, Skipworth signed a letter-of-intent to attend Arizona State, from
the outset he said he didn't anticipate any issues to emerge during contract
negotiations, which began before the Marlins selected him.
"I was blown away," Skipworth said on draft day earlier this month.
"I'm very happy with it. My family is very happy with it. We're extremely
close [to a deal]."
The signing bonus should be around $2.4 million.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Skipworth hit .584 with 12 homers and 44 RBI his
senior season and got a state-record 18 hits in as many plate appearances.
According to Baseball America, the highest pick to sign so far is prep
outfielder Aaron Hicks, whom the Twins selected 14th overall. Hicks received
a $1.78 million signing bonus.
Three other first-round selections have agreed to terms since the draft.
