DENVER -- Watching Dan Uggla take a bat into the cages on Friday afternoon was
a welcome sight for the Marlins.
Recovering from a sprained left ankle, Uggla spent about 10 minutes hitting in
the batting cage on Friday. All went well, and Uggla said he hopes to take live
batting practice on Saturday afternoon at Coors Field.
The Marlins have been without their power-hitting second baseman since June 28.
He rolled his ankle while turning past first base on a single.
He immediately came out in the fourth inning of that game, and has since missed
six straight games.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he would shy away from using Uggla as a
pinch-hitter Friday night against the Rockies.
There is a chance he could be available to pinch-hit on Saturday, but Sunday
may be a more realistic option.
Uggla did some light running on Thursday and rode a stationary bike on Friday.
The second baseman, who has 23 home runs and is a candidate to make the
All-Star team, is hopeful to return to the Marlins' starting lineup sometime
during their current road trip. At the earliest that may be is on Monday at San
Diego.
Alfredo Amezaga started at second base on Friday.
