[情報] Florida Marlins trade pitcher Matt Lindstrom for 2 minor
INDIANAPOLIS -- It didn't take long to discover the Marlins made a shrewd
move when they traded for Matt Lindstrom in 2006. The reliever, who came
armed with a 100-mph fastball, was an instant contributor out of the bullpen.
But it's going to take much longer to establish a final verdict on the
Marlins' decision to trade away Lindstrom, which they did Wednesday when they
dealt him to the Houston Astros.
In return, the Marlins received a pair of low-rung minor leaguers who are
years from reaching the majors.
``We reached down a little bit,'' said Larry Beinfest, the Marlins' president
of baseball operations after announcing the team's first transaction of the
winter meetings. ``But we liked the top end on both of them.''
In exchange for Lindstrom, the Marlins acquired right-handed pitcher Robert
Bono, shortstop Luis Bryan, and a player to be named later. It was a move,
like so many for the Marlins, that was driven by financial motives.
Lindstrom stands to receive a hefty raise through salary arbitration. As
such, he was deemed expendable, just like two other arbitration players the
Marlins are peddling -- second baseman Dan Uggla and left-hander Renyel Pinto.
Either of those two players could be dealt within days.
For Lindstrom, the end came Wednesday.
The 28-year-old pitcher made his Major League debut with the Marlins in 2007
after they obtained him from the New York Mets, along with Henry Owens, for
pitcher Jason Vargas.
Not only didn't Vargas pan out for the Mets, but Lindstrom further riled Mets
fans by recording the final out at Shea Stadium to end the '08 season.
Lindstrom was so successful in the setup role that season that the Marlins
made him their closer in '09.
But Lindstrom dealt with arm issues that originated from the World Baseball
Classic when he participated for Team USA, spent time on the disabled list,
never seemed to get on track in his role as closer and eventually lost the
job to Leo Nunez.
``I didn't lose my job because of ineffectiveness, although I was ineffective
at times,'' said Lindstrom, who lost the closer's job to Nunez when he went
on the DL in June and never won it back after he returned at the end of July.
``That's a tribute to Leo as well,'' Lindstrom said. ``He got his opportunity
and he made the most of it.''
The Marlins plan to keep Nunez in the closer's role next season.
But the rest of their bullpen has become a question mark. In addition to
Lindstrom, free agent relievers Kiko Calero and Brendan Donnelly also aren't
returning.
``It's something that we're looking at,'' said Beinfest, adding that Tim Wood
and Chris LeRoux could battle for bullpen spots.
Beinfest said the Marlins will almost certainly sift through non-tendered
free agents and six-year minor-league free agents, as they have done
successfully in the past, to put together the rest of the bullpen.
Beinfest said a handful of teams expressed serious interest in Lindstrom, but
that Houston put together the best offer.
Bono, who was Houston's 11th-round draft pick in 2007, went 10-8 with a 3.20
ERA in 25 starts for Single A Lexington (Ky.) last season. Bryan, 19, hit
.340 in 105 at bats in for the Gulf Coast (Rookie) League Astros. The Marlins
also get a player to be named later in the trade.
