JUPITER, Fla. -- Command and the cold have been problematic for Marlins
right-hander Ryan Tucker.
A former compensatory first-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft,
Tucker had a tough time throwing strikes in a two-inning start against the
Mets on Monday at Roger Dean Stadium.
Tagged for two runs, the 23-year-old threw 49 pitches, 26 for strikes. The
Mets broke the game open with eight runs in the ninth inning and won, 11-2.
Disappointed with his performance, Tucker afterwards told reporters he is
having difficulty commanding his pitches and adapting to the chilly weather
that has been present since the start of Spring Training.
"I'm still trying to get a feel," said the hard-throwing right-hander, who
dealt with surgery to his left knee in 2009. "I know the way I'm throwing
right now, nothing [positive] is going to happen. I have to figure stuff out.
That's kind of the way it goes. It's only on me. I'm trying. There is no one
trying harder than I am."
A native of Southern California, Tucker revealed to reporters that the chilly
weather affects his extremities. The reason, he said, is because he has
Raynaud's Syndrome, a condition that impairs blood flow to his fingers and
toes. He said he's had it his whole life, but wasn't aware of it until he
pitched in the cold in the Minor Leagues a few years ago.
Even though Monday was 72 degrees when the game started, Tucker struggled to
keep his hands warm. Repeatedly, he would blow into his hands in hopes of
getting a better grip.
"It's not something I've talked about with a lot of people," Tucker said.
"The trainers know about it. I have a syndrome. I have a problem when I get
cold. My fingers will get numb. I'm dealing with it. I'm trying."
Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez noted he is aware of the condition.
"We'll see how it works itself out," Gonzalez said.
Tucker added the condition isn't an excuse for a poor outing.
"I've had a tough time. I'm not that guy who is going to make excuses, never,
ever," Tucker said. "I've got to figure something out. That's just what it
comes down to.
"It gets numb. I can't feel the ball. It impacts extremities. I have small
nerve endings in my toes and fingers."
If he makes the Opening Day roster, the Marlins start off the season in New
York on April 5 against the Mets.
"I have quite an issue when it comes to the cold," Tucker said. "I can't get
my hands warm, ever. I'm blowing on them all the time. I'm making sure with
the umpire that he's OK with it. It's a tough issue for me. It's really
difficult to grab the ball and not feel like I'm going to hit the guy [at
bat]."
Tucker is coming off an injury-plagued 2009, which limited him to 23 2/3
Minor League innings. He had surgery to repair a torn quad above his left
knee, and then dealt with an oblique strain.
Missing so much time has set back his timing.
"My tempo is not there," Tucker said. "My speed on my delivery, and getting
the feel back, is not there yet.
"I'm trying to throw strikes. I'm trying to work on things. I'm trying to get
acclimated to throwing again. It's been a year since I've been on the mound.
I don't feel right yet."
