In the second half, they will be searching for progression. If it doesn't happen, and soon, there may be some roster revisions. Time is of the essence if the Marlins hope to turn around a season that started off promising. Coming out of Spring Training, there were playoff aspirations for a franchise that has held the same nucleus since 2006. But a shaky bullpen and inconsistent situational hitting scarred the first half to the point where the club decided to make a change on June 23. Fredi Gonzalez was dismissed as manager and replaced six days later by Edwin Rodriguez, who was promoted from being the Triple-A New Orleans manager. Sandwiched between those two announcements were talks with former Rangers and Mets manager Bobby Valentine. When those negotiations broke down, team owner Jeffrey Loria looked to stabilize the clubhouse by naming Rodriguez as manager for the remainder of the season. From there, he will re-evaluate. Throughout the turmoil of one of the most hectic weeks in franchise history, Rodriguez stressed the managerial change didn't sway the objective. "I told them the importance of the road trip," Rodriguez said of a string of 13 straight games away from Sun Life Stadium. "I told them that we've got to start to put up some W's." With the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline approaching, the Marlins have a couple of weeks to begin tracking in the right direction. If they don't, deals are highly likely. The Marlins are looking to scratch their way back to the .500 mark and get into playoff contention. While the team has an uphill climb, Loria said the day he committed to Rodriguez that he hadn't given up on the 2010 season. "We're very good at what we do, and we can make it a lot better," Loria said. "We should be able to make a charge. I haven't given up on the season, and neither have the players -- period." At the time of the managerial change, president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest spoke about getting the squad out of neutral. "We're looking at our personnel, and we're looking at a leadership change to hopefully get us on the accelerator," Beinfest said. Behind All-Stars Josh Johnson and Hanley Ramirez, the Marlins have two of the top young franchise-caliber players in the game. Ramirez was voted into the All-Star Game as the starting shortstop for the third straight year. Blessed with as much raw talent as anyone in the game, Ramirez didn't have a typical first half by his standards. The National League batting champ in 2009 with a .342 average hovered just below the .300 mark for most of the first three months. He also struggled with runners in scoring position. That said, the 26-year-old still was a threat, and he's on pace for another 26-plus homer, 100-plus RBI season. Getting Ramirez going, however, is crucial if the Marlins hope to sneak back into the race. Johnson, meanwhile, has entrenched himself as one of the top pitchers in the game. The 26-year-old right-hander flirted with a Major League milestone in the first half when he went eight straight starts with six innings or more, allowing one or fewer earned runs. The big league record is 11 set by Bob Gibson in 1968. The question as the team moves forward is who will be building around the two superstars. First baseman Gaby Sanchez should receive serious NL Rookie of the Year consideration. Chris Coghlan, the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year, overcame a rough first month to solidify the leadoff spot. Right-field prospect Mike Stanton belted 21 homers in 52 games at Double-A Jacksonville. There have been some growing pains for Stanton in the Majors. Once his game matures, so should his production, where he projects to be a middle-of-the-lineup threat. Dan Uggla, Cody Ross and Jorge Cantu -- veteran everyday players -- each were streaky in the first half. Cantu is eligible for free agency after the season, and he could be a prime candidate to be traded if the team is out of the race. Uggla and Ross each have one year remaining in arbitration, and both could be attractive trade pieces if the organization decides to move in another direction. The offense has the potential to score a lot of runs. They've just come in bunches more than consistently. The club is hoping to improve its situational hitting in the final few months. For the most part, the everyday lineup played just about every game. Rodriguez said he plans on using his bench more, occasionally resting regulars, to get the most out of the entire roster -- not just 15 or 16 players. Piecing together the bullpen has been a work in progress all season. It is an area the team has hoped to address internally. Of late, there has been some improvement. Besides closer Leo Nunez, and setup right-hander Clay Hensley, who spent time on the disabled list, there have been numerous ups and downs in the bullpen. Rodriguez had the benefit of managing many of the relievers either this year or 2009 at Triple-A New Orleans. He has seen many of them, like Tim Wood and Jose Veras, be successful with the Zephyrs. Rodriguez has already shown that, when necessary, he will do some situational relief pitching, rather than stick with one pitcher for an entire inning. On the Fourth of July in Atlanta, for instance, he used Hensley, Wood and Taylor Tankersley to each record an out. "If we want to win, we need all those guys -- Woody, Tank and Jose Veras -- to all do the job," Rodriguez said. Johnson, meanwhile, has been a model of consistency. An argument can be made that he was as good as anyone in the first half. His ERA speaks to that. Cy Young: Josh Johnson The 26-year-old should also get serious NL Cy Young consideration at the end of the year. He had a stretch of eight straight starts allowing no more than one earned run. It was the most since Bob Gibson's Major League record of 11 set in 1968. The string alone reflects how consistent Johnson is. Top Rookie: Gaby Sanchez Based on numbers alone, Sanchez is making a strong case to being the Marlins' fourth NL Rookie of the Year. He's caught in a class that includes Jason Heyward and Stephen Strasburg. But Sanchez has been one of the most consistent players on the team. His approach at the plate is impressive, and so are his numbers. Top Reliever: Leo Nunez Attacking with his 95-97 mph fastball more is an objective the team wants to see out of Nunez. He had some struggles just before the break, but overall he has quietly been one of the NL's most dependable closers.
