Marlins' Anibal Sanchez requests Roy Halladay matchup

PHILADELPHIA -- Not one to back down to a challenge, Marlins pitcher Anibal
Sanchez put in a special request to face Phillies ace Roy Halladay in the
second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
“He wants to face Halladay,” manager Edwin Rodriguez said of Sanchez, who
has won six consecutive decisions. “He was asking four or five days ago if
we knew when Halladay was going to pitch, in the first or second game. And he
said when we find out, he wants that game. He's up for the challenge.”
Going into Tuesday, the Marlins had lost 14 of their previous 18 games, and
Sanchez was the winning pitcher in three of the four victories. Edward Mujica
came out of the bullpen to register the only other win during that stretch.
Villanueva to make debut
The Marlins are calling up right-hander Elih Villanueva to start the first
game of the doubleheader in what will mark his major-league debut.
Villanueva, who was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in
2010, has gone 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA at Triple A New Orleans. Villanueva
attended FIU, Miami Dade College and Florida State before the Marlins
selected him in the 27th round of the 2008 first-year player draft.
To make room for Villaneuva, the Marlins will have to make moves on their
25-man and 40-man rosters. One potential move for the 40-man: transferring
Josh Johnson from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. If that occurs,
Johnson would not be eligible to pitch until right after the All-Star break.
Long-distance friendship
Logan Morrison befriended a diehard Phillies fan on his Twitter account and
invited him to be his guest at Tuesday's game. The two have been exchanging
tweets since the offseason.
“He was making fun of me one time, and I ended up making fun of him,”
Morrison said of Mark Marinelli, a 38-year-old resident of Bethlehem, Pa.
When Morrison found out that Marinelli had Muscular Dystrophy, he invited him
to be his guest. Morrison said he set it up so that Marinelli could meet
players for his beloved Phillies.
‧ Outfielder Scott Cousins was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a
lower-back strain. But Rodriguez said the injury did not stem from Cousins'
collision at the plate with Giants catcher Buster Posey on May 25. Cousins, who
received death threats in the aftermath of the collision, had gone 1 for 14 at
the plate since then.
‧ With left-hander Cole Hamels starting Tuesday for the Phillies, Emilio
Bonifacio got the start in center in place of Chris Coghlan. Rodriguez said
Bonifacio would continue to start against left-handers, as Coghlan has
struggled against southpaws.
SCOUTING REPORT
Villanueva will become the third Marlins pitcher over the past 22 games to
make his major-league debut as a starter, joining Jay Buente and Brad Hand,
when he faces the Phillies in the first game of Wednesday's day-night
doubleheader. Sanchez, who takes the mound in the second game for the
Marlins, has gone 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA in eight career starts at Citizens Bank
Park.
