The meetings with Buehrle and Reyes will take place in South Florida, one
source said. The meeting with Cespedes, which will include Marlins owner
Jeffrey Loria, will take place in the Dominican Republic.
Who are the top free agents and where are they most likely to land?
The Marlins’ No. 1 priority is upgrading their rotation. Buehrle, 32, played
for new Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen with the White Sox, but he is a native
of St. Charles, Mo., and might prefer to stay in the Midwest, according to a
source with knowledge of his thinking.
Reyes, 28, is considered one of the top prizes in this year’s free-agent
market, and his arrival could electrify South Florida. If the Marlins signed
him, they would move shortstop Hanley Ramirez to third base.
Cespedes, a five-tool center fielder whose listed age is 26, held an open
workout last Friday in the Dominican with scouts from numerous clubs in
attendance.
A number of other teams, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and
Nationals, also had a significant presence at Cespedes’ workout, sources say.
Cespedes is expected to receive clearance to become a free agent later this
month. Some executives believe he will command an even larger financial
package than the approximately $30 million that the Reds gave Cuban
left-hander Aroldis Chapman in January 2010.
