ST. PETERSBURG -- Tampa Bay added another piece to its bullpen on Monday night, acquiring right-hander Burke Badenhop from Miami in exchange for catcher Jake Jefferies. In 2011, Badenhop, 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, went 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in 50 games for the Marlins and 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 11 games for Triple-A New Orleans. He recorded 51 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings with just 24 walks. In 151 Major League games, he is 13-15 with a 4.34 ERA. He began his professional career with the Tigers but went to the Marlins in the trade that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit on Dec. 4, 2007. Badenhop, 28, who is primarily a long reliever, made $750,000 in 2011 and is arbitration-eligible; the Rays plan to tender him a contract. Badenhop spoke with Andrew Friedman, executive vice president of baseball operations, about his role, "and he said the way that they run the bullpen, the way [manager] Joe Maddon runs the bullpen, he's going to put you in spots to succeed, wherever that is, and wherever they think you will match up the best. So I think that's an awesome way to kind of go about it. "My ground-ball numbers were pretty solid last year. And that's another thing Andrew said: The way they run their defense, defensive positioning and stuff, he thinks it's going to work wonders for a guy like myself. I'm basically trying to put the ball on the ground and let my defense do some work. ... I'm not going to blow balls by guys. I'm in there to work quick and keep balls on the ground and keep my team in the game, pretty much." Badenhop will join another recent newcomer to the bullpen, right-hander Josh Lueke, whom the Rays acquired, along with a player to be named or cash, from the Mariners for John Jaso on Nov. 27.
