NEW YORK - It’s hard to say the sky is falling with the Red Sox
[team stats] still holding a seven-game lead in the AL East this
morning.
But after falling, 5-3, to the Yankees and losing Manny
Ramirez [stats] and Bobby Kielty to back injuries last night,
there were enough M. Night Shyamalan-type signs hovering over the
Bronx to give Red Sox followers a minor case of the
heebie-jeebies.

With a partial lunar eclipse in the morning, a full moon rising
in the evening and a petrified but living squirrel perched atop
the right field foul pole at Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox resumed
their eternal squabble with the Yankees in a somewhat spacy
atmosphere, with the visitors getting lost in it.
The Red Sox’ favorite ex-idiot, Johnny Damon, supplied the
game-winning hit with a two-run home run in the seventh inning off
Daisuke Matsuzaka, who also gave up a go-ahead home run to Derek
Jeter in the fifth in losing his third consecutive decision.
“In a game like this, a couple of mistakes can go a long way,”
said Sox manager Terry Francona, not making a sly reference to
Damon’s home run, which barely cleared the right field wall next
to the squirrely pole, just 314 feet from home plate. “He tried
to go front-door cutter to Jeter and got it out too much over the
plate and he tried to come in on Johnny, and even though the ball
didn’t catch the great part of the bat because it wasn’t in
enough, he was able to keep it fair in the perfect part of the
ballpark.”
Terry
Francona said Ramirez will be re-evaluated today and the team has
no interest in seeing him visit the disabled list. But just
mentioning that raised the spectre of the Red Sox’ sustaining a
serious blow to their lineup.
That lineup was able to do enough damage to Yankees starter Andy
Pettitte that Matsuzaka should have been able to hold on to at
least a tie, especially after his mates had dug him out of a 2-0
hole.
Needing 26 pitches before he could record his third out of the
first inning, Matsuzaka’s opening effort paled next to Pettitte,
who needed just seven pitches in the first.
The Red Sox struck back when Ramirez led off the second
inning by poking a home run over the right field wall. An inning
later, they tied it on David Ortiz [stats]’ sacrifice fly.
Both starters settled in after that, aside from Jeter’s home run
and Jason Varitek [stats]’s game-tying solo shot to lead off the
seventh.
Ramirez
David Ortiz
Matsuzaka’s sharpness evaporated in the bottom of that inning. He
allowed a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt and Damon’s
homer. One walk later, Matsuzaka was done for the evening. He
threw 110 pitches but the 84 he needed for his final 5 1/3 innings
could not make up for his early inefficiency and his late
failures.
“Both (home run) pitches could have been prevented so I
definitely regret both,” said Matsuzaka, whose record dropped to
13-11 with his first loss in three starts against the Yankees. “I
think all the responsibility for my recent losses belong to me.”
Matsuzaka’s ERA against the Yankees stands at a bloated 6.98, a
testament to the home team’s offensive prowess and the threat it
presents to any team employing mediocre pitching, no matter how
briefly. Last night, Matsuzaka was shaky in the first, then made
two brief but major mistakes.
The Yankees pounced and shaved a game off the Red Sox [team stats]
’ lead.
With all the mischief going on in the heavens last night, the loss
felt like something bigger than it probably was.
The key word there is “probably.”
