Spotlight on Matsuzaka again
By Tony Massarotti
Thursday, October 4, 2007 - Updated 15h ago
In Japan, Daisuke Matsuzaka had a deserved reputation as a
big-game pitcher. Beginning tomorrow, the simple truth is that the
Red Sox [team stats]’ $103 million man will have to prove
himself all over again.
After all, he’s in the big leagues now.
103 million
Despite winning 15 games in his first major league season,
Matsuzaka faded considerably down the stretch, going just 1-4 with
a 8.15 ERA over a span of seven starts from the middle of August
to late September. Sox officials were encouraged enough by his
season finale on Friday against Minnesota that Matsuzaka will
pitch the second game of the series, and not the third, but
Matsuzaka nonetheless has a great deal to live up to.
Matsuzaka has lived a fishbowl existence from the day he arrived
at spring training, yet many are still curious when it comes to
his potential impact on the club.
“I’d say more than curious,” Sox manager Terry Francona said
when asked about Matsuzaka’s major league postseason debut,
during which he will oppose Los Angeles right-hander Kelvim
Escobar in Game 2 of the American League Division Series with the
Sox up, 1-0, after a 4-0 victory last night.
“I think (Matsuzaka’s ability to perform under pressure) has not
been an issue with us. I think we have enjoyed watching the way
he has handled certain things that have been thrown to him. And we
’ve all seen the bumps in the road, the hiccups in some of the
outings. But being intimidated or shrinking from a challenge won’
t be one of them. We feel that is really one of his strengths. And
he’s got a lot of them, but I think this stage will be a good
place for him to show what he can do.”
As for Matsuzaka himself, he had decidedly little to say (even
less than usual) when speaking with reporters prior to last night’
s series opener at Fenway Park [map]. The right-hander has been
extremely guarded with reporters this season, likely a byproduct
of his status as a megastar in Japan.
While pitching in his native land, Matsuzaka emerged as a phenom
during a national high school tournament. He further established
his reputation as a big-game pitcher with the Seibu Lions, and was
dominant for Japan in last year’s World Baseball Classic.
If that translates onto the field tomorrow night, the Red Sox
could have a invaluable weapon stationed between Game 1 starter
Josh Beckett [stats] and Game 3 starter Curt Schilling [stats]
throughout the postseason.
“I feel that, you know, because of those experiences (in Japan),
I will be able to approach this game with the same approach and
mentality that I’ve been able to approach my games during the
regular season,” Matsuzaka said.
Hopefully for the Red Sox’ sake, he wasn’t including the
majority of those games in August and September.
