:( http://0rz.tw/dc3TF Is the real Dice-K just heating up? By Tony Massarotti / Baseball notes Sunday, April 13, 2008 - On Tuesday, after the Red Sox [team stats] finally had settled into the 2008 season and the Detroit Tigers had dropped to 0-7, Jim Leyland sat behind his desk in the visiting manager’s office at an emptying Fenway Park [map]. With regard to the Red Sox, at least, what Leyland said was what the Red Sox have been waiting to hear. “Very, very aggressive with his fastball,” Leyland said, referring to Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. “I think we’ve seen him three times and that’s the best I’ve seen him.” For Matsuzaka, the first part of that statement is more important than the second. So now the New York Yankees will get their first look at the new (and improved?) Matsuzaka, who pitched the kind of game on Tuesday that the Red Sox hope will become a blueprint for his future success. In the first inning against the Tigers, Matsuzaka threw 19 pitches, 18 of them fastballs. By the middle of the second, 26 of Matsuzaka’s first 27 pitches were fastballs of the four-seam (25) or two-seam (one) variety, which put the Tigers on their heels from the outset. After the game, while the Tigers spoke of being tentative amid a horrendous start, Matsuzaka’s aggressiveness was not overlooked. One uniformed Tiger spoke of how Matsuzaka’s approach completely flew in the face of the team’s scouting reports on him, which suggested that Matsuzaka relied heavily on his offspeed pitches and nibbled at the sides of the plate. So while the Tigers sat back in the early innings on Tuesday, Matsuzaka did the unexpected. He attacked. What this all means in the long run is anybody’s guess, but three starts into Matsuzaka’s second season in Boston, the early signs are good. All too often last season, particularly late in the year, Matsuzaka diddled around with opposing hitters and needlessly drove up his pitch count. By the final third of the schedule, Matsuzaka was unsurprisingly out of bullets. Sox manager Terry Francona made a point during spring training of saying that Matsuzaka needed to avoid long at-bats and three-ball counts. Particularly in the absence of Curt Schilling [stats], the Red Sox now need Matsuzaka to step up and become the No. 2 starter (at least) that the club truly needs. For Matsuzaka, that means fewer pitches, more outs, less diddling around. On Tuesday, by the end of Matsuzaka’s outing, the numbers were encouraging. Of the 108 pitches Matsuzaka threw against the Tigers, 106 were accurately charted. Of those 106, an estimated 72 were fastballs of the four-seam or two-seam variety. (The large majority were four-seamers.) That means that roughly 68 percent of Matsuzaka’s pitches were true fastballs -- an estimated, additional 10 pitches were cut fastballs clocked at roughly 88-89 miles per hour -- which is precisely the kind of approach the Red Sox have been trying to drill into his head since the end of last season. Let’s back up here for a minute. Because Matsuzaka does not possess the raw stuff of a Josh Beckett [stats] -- how many pitchers do? -- command of his fastball is obviously of the utmost importance. Even at 92-94 mph, if Matsuzaka misses his spots, he is extremely vulnerable. What Matsuzaka did on Tuesday was to throw his fastball aggressively and spot it, which is critical combination for anyone of his talent. But for Matsuzaka, especially, it is the key for him keeping his pitch counts down and getting outs. And perhaps, the difference between him being a legitimate No. 2 starter and just another run-of-the-mill, middle-of-the-rotation guy. Before anyone suggests that Matsuzaka has turned the corner, there is obviously a great deal more to consider. For starters, the Tigers had scored just 15 runs in their first seven games, which meant the lineup was in a funk. Second, the Tigers’ lineup against Matsuzaka featured only two left-handed batters -- the switch-hitting Carlos Guillen and Jacque Jones -- which served Matsuzaka well given his command of the fastball. When Matsuzaka missed, he frequently missed in the left-handed batter’s box. And because he established his fastball early to both sides of the plate, right-handed hitters like Brandon Inge and Placido Polanco were all too eager to chase breaking pitches away and out of the strike zone, at least early in the game. In the final count Tuesday, righties went 3-for-16 against Matsuzaka (a .188 average) while lefties went 1-for-6 (.167). 1 for 6 (.167). For what it’s worth, Matsuzaka last season posted a 6.12 ERA in four starts against the Yankees. In 25 innings, he walked 13. Ten of those walks came to left-handed batters, which suggests that Matsuzaka had difficulty throwing both his fastball and changeup for strikes. The latter is one of Matsuzaka’s greatest weapons, a huge reason lefties are just 2-for-27 against Matsuzaka this season (an .074 average) and batted just .238 against him last year, but the pitch is far more effective (like all offspeed pitches) if Matsuzaka can first establish his fastball. By now, we all know what kind of challenge the Yankees present to any pitcher. In Pedro Martinez’ Red Sox starts, in particular, the Yankees were deft at driving up pitch counts and forcing Martinez from the game early. Last season, Matsuzaka threw 456 pitches in 25 innings against New York, an average of roughly 18.2 per inning. Generally speaking, he needed 114 pitches to get through six innings against them when the same number should have gotten him through seven or eight. So what happens tonight? Good question. But as will be the case with Daisuke Matsuzaka every time he takes the mound season, the results will likely stem from how effectively he throws his fastball.
