Ace to injured starter: Use time wisely
By Rob Bradford / Red Sox Notebook
Sunday, June 1, 2008
A year ago, Josh Beckett was in the same place Daisuke Matsuzaka is now.
As was the case with Beckett last season, Matsuzaka enters June on the 15-day
disabled list, staring at a potential opportunity. Or at least that's the
message passed along by the Red Sox ace when meeting up with his suddenly
injured fellow starter yesterday at Camden Yards.
「A pitching coach told me, 『This is your time to get in the best shape of
your life.』 That's what I told Daisuke and it's the truth,」 Beckett said of
what awaits Matsuzaka in the right-hander's recovery from a mild strain of his
right rotator cuff and deltoid muscle. 「That was the one thing about my
built-in break, I was in better shape when I came out of it than when I went
in.」
Clearly the advice was taken to heart by Matsuzaka, who addressed the media
before last night's 6-3 win against the Orioles.
「It's too bad that no matter how hard I work out now, it isn't going to affect
the outcome of the games,」 Matsuzaka said through translator Masa Hoshino,
「but I'm going to treat this next little while as a minicamp in the middle of
the season and do my best to get better.」
Matsuzaka said he wasn't overly concerned when he walked off the mound Tuesday
in Seattle, but understood the process that needed to be executed. It is, he
explained, somewhat difficult to take such a detour during a season in which he
is tied for first in the American League with eight wins (8-0) and second in
ERA (2.53).
「For me, personally, I know that everyone else on the team - the position
players and pitchers - are tired,」 he said. 「Even though I might feel OK,
the club has told me to take this time to rest up and get healed well. Although
I appreciate the rest and the protection I'm getting, I do feel bad that I'm
the only one getting rest at this time.」It is a feeling of guilt which Beckett
explained will dissipate with time, especially when Matsuzaka begins to see the
effects of the kind of break which helped last season's AL Cy Young Award
runner-up to excel in October.
「You have nothing else to do (but work out),」 said Beckett, who returned from
an avulsion problem on his right middle finger on June 3 last year. 「You're on
a schedule, with all the same workouts and nothing having changed except you
just can't throw. And on that day where you're supposed to be pitching you have
to emulate that and just work your (rear end) off. It will be good for him.」
