Matsuzaka to miss at least a month, likely more

BOSTON -- It might be a long time before Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches again for
the Red Sox.
Matsuzaka was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and a
strain to his common flexor mass, the result of an MRI taken on Tuesday by
team medical director Dr. Tom Gill.
For now, Matsuzaka will be shut down for two weeks before being re-examined.
Manager Terry Francona said, though, that a return to throwing even then
would be "ambitious."
"That is the first time that he will be looked at, but I don't think that we
should expect him to be ready to throw then," said Francona. "We've got to
let him have some time down, and then let him, when he pitches again, let him
go out there and feel where he's free and easy, where he doesn't have to
guard against anything, so he can think about pitching and not his arm."
Matsuzaka hasn't felt right since he departed his April 29 start against the
Mariners with stiffness in that right elbow. Anyone watching the right-hander
could tell that, even after he returned with some extra rest, he wasn't
pitching the same. Matsuzaka confirmed that he had altered the way he
pitched, throwing fewer fastballs and more curveballs to compensate for a
drop in velocity of roughly two miles per hour.
"The feeling of the pitches changed after the Mariners. That's something I
modified to," Matsuzaka said through interpreter Kenta Yamada. "I couldn't
throw as fast as before. But within this condition, I tried to do my best to
modify it. I was fortunate enough to win against Minnesota. But if I
continued this pitching, I wouldn't help the team."
Matsuzaka said he might seek a second opinion during his two weeks off, as
the MRI revealed an injury "worse than [he] expected." Surgery, however, is
not a concern right now. The ulnar collateral ligament is the one involved in
Tommy John surgery.
"At this point, it's difficult to throw with this pain. I usually have a high
tolerance, but this time it's hard for me to keep throwing," he said. "I
can't really do anything for now, so all I can do is focus on this treatment
and rehabilitation."
When Matsuzaka does get back to throwing, it will still be a while before he
returns to the hill for Boston. Francona said the usual timetable calls for
equal amounts of downtime and rehabilitation, meaning the most optimistic
forecast has Matsuzaka back in roughly one month. It's more realistic to
expect him to be out longer than that.
"You can kind of do the math," Francona said. "If the guy is down three or
four weeks and it takes three or four weeks to get back to the mound, you're
not going to get on a big league mound real quick."
That said, the manager is glad the Red Sox caught it when they did -- albeit
two weeks after the discomfort started for Matsuzaka.
"I'm glad we got him looked at. I don't know that he really wanted to,"
Francona said. "I'm glad we did this before it turned into something, I
guess, that maybe couldn't be manageable."
Alfredo Aceves will take Matsuzaka's spot in the rotation on Saturday.
