Looking more confident than ever, No. 1 seeded Amelie Mauresmo extended the
quest to win her third Slam this year by escaping 47th-ranked Meghann
Shaughnessy, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
But the match wasn't tension-free.
"[Shaughnessy] was tough," Mauresmo conceded. "She gave me some trouble. I
have a few things to work on, but I'm very happy to go through," she said.
Mauresmo's accurate first serve set up 40 of the 81 total points she won. Her
net game was also effective but so was Shaughnessy's, and they both
approached the net with near-equal frequency. In the end, Shaughnessy simply
made more unforced errors (35) compared to Mauresmo (22).
"I think it was pretty intense match," Mauresmo said. "It's good to have
these kind of matches, I think, for me."
The American is now 0-5 against this year's Australian and Wimbledon champion
and 0-2 in Slams. Mauresmo also defeated Shaughnessy at the 2006 French Open
in the first round.
Each set on Thursday unfolded similarly.
In the first set, Mauresmo earned the first break to lead 3-2, and widened to
lead to 4-2 before Shaughnessy broke back to tie at 4 apiece. Mauresmo
returned the break to lead 5-4 then served out the match. By the end of the
55-minute set, Mauresmo was far from dominant. She had almost as many winners
(13) as she did unforced errors (14), but Shaughnessy couldn't convert more
than one (of 7) of her break opportunities.
In a deja vu of the first set, Mauresmo earned the first break in the second
set to lead 3-2. Once again, Mauresmo widened her lead to 4-2. She made it
5-3 before shutting out Shaughnessy on her own serve to break the American on
match point.
