Maria Sharapova vaulted into her first US Open final with a decisive win over
top seed Amelie Mauresmo Friday. Mauresmo just barely managed one 6-4 set
sandwiched in between two "bagels," virtually handing the match to Sharapova
6-0, 4-6, 6-0.
The towering teen's best weapon was her confidence right out of the gate.
"Against someone like her, you can't get off to a slow start," Sharapova said
after the match. The Russian blazed through the first set with machine-like
precision, grunting through her giant groundstrokes. It took just 24 minutes
for Sharapova to close out the set 6-0.
Mauresmo has a well known history of succumbing to nerves at crucial moments.
After 32 Grand Slam attempts, she finally walked away with her first Slam
title at this year's Australian Open, and cemented that this summer with a
second at Wimbledon.
Mauresmo just barely swiped the second set thanks to a few minor errors from
Sharapova, and a lot of luck. When she held her serve for the first time,
Mauresmo reacted with a skip and a fist pump so jubilant, one might think
she'd just put away the entire match. Though the score remained on-serve,
Sharapova was winning her games easily, while Mauresmo had to battle just to
hang onto her serve. Finally, at 5-4 she took a break chance, and it couldn't
have come at a better time. She would have the opportunity to come back in a
third set.
Yet, Mauresmo was out of steam. The final set may have had the crowd in
Arthur Ashe Stadium wondering if they were experiencing deja-vu when it
turned into a virtual copy of the first. Sharapova was on fire and you could
almost predict her winners before the ball even hit the ground purely from
the volume of her grunting. Six games later, the touted Russian clinched her
first-ever victory against the Frenchwoman.
This was a far cry from the Mauresmo we saw at Wimbledon just two months ago.
She also faced Sharapova in the semifinals there, but managed to knock the 19
year-old out in three sets.
Maria is 1-4 against Justine Henin-Hardenne who she'll face Saturday in the
women's final.
With the No. 1 seed eliminated, there is the potential now for a rankings
shakeup. Sharapova will hold her No. 3 ranking no matter happens here, but
with Mauresmo out now, Justine Henin Hardenne will reclaim the No. 1 spot, if
she wins Saturday's final.
