Amelie Mauresmo defeated – easy win for Serena Williams
Stuttgart. Amelie Mauresmo’s defeat in the first round means that the first
top player has fallen at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The 28-year-old
Frenchwoman lost 6:2, 7:5 to Elena Dementieva (Russia). Serena Williams,
on the other hand, easily moved in to the second round after an easy
6:0, 6:0 win against Zuzana Ondraskova (Czech Republic) and will now meet
qualifier Julia Vakulenko from the Ukraine on Wednesday.
A visibly disappointed Amelie Mauresmo, the former world No 1, said:
"It’s so disappointing to be out of the tournament. I had no chance
in the first set. I found my game after that and tried to dictate
play. On the whole I was playing much better than two weeks ago in
Peking. But it simply isn't my year. The real low-point was my
appendicitis operation in March. Now I need match practice to get
back to form.”
“Having to play Amelie in the first round of a tournament is unbelievably
hard. I thought at first I was hearing things. But it just shows how classy
the field is here in Stuttgart,” said Elena Dementieva, who had to retire
last year.“I played very consistently and was very confident. The second set
was quite close and I’m glad it didn’t go to a third set.”
Another player to reach the next round is eight-time Grand Slam winner Serena
Williams, who didn’t lose a game when beating Zuzana Ondraskova. The 27-year-
old Czech was given a place in the first round after Elena Bovina (Russia) had
to pull out at the last minute with an ankle injury. “I played really well and
am very happy. It’s lovely being here in Stuttgart and it’s great playing in
this beautiful arena. This stadium is one for the future.”
With Tatjana Malek and Julia Goerges both losing today, there is now no German
left in the singles at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Local hero Malek came
close to causing an upset in her match against title holder Nadia Petrova
(No 9). After winning the first set 6:2, she then lost the next two 6:1, 6:1.
In the final match of the day Julia Goerges, who like Tatjana Malek was given
a main draw wild card, went down 6:4, 6:4 to Julia Vakulenko (Ukraine),
whereby she suffered an ankle injury in the latter stages of the match.
“It was very difficult finding one’s rhythm against her,” said Julia
Goerges. “For me it was nevertheless a good experience to play here even
though I can definitely play better. But perhaps that’ll happen next year.”
Shahar Peer (Israel), who beat Francesca Schiavone (Italy) 6:1, 7:6, has also
gone through to the next round. Her next opponent will be Jelena Jankovic
(Serbia). The world No 3 had a first round bye.
In Tuesday’s doubles matches Martina Muller/Gabriela Navratilova (Germany/
Czech republic) won 6:4, 0:6, 1:0 against Andrea Ehritt-Vanc/Mervana
Jugic-Salkic (Rumania,/Bosnia Herzegovina). Yung-Jan Chan/Dinara Safina
(Taiwan/Russia) beat the Polish team Klaudia Jans/Alicja Rosolska 6:2, 6:4.
Michaella Krajicek/Vladimira Uhlirova (Netherlands/Czech republic) ousted
Emmanuelle Gagliardi/Nicole Pratt (Switzerland/Australia) 6:0, 6:1.
