It wasn't a convincing performance from Amélie Mauresmo, but when a player
of her quality plays to avoid a third successive first round defeat, that can
be forgiven. The former world No 1 came through her first outing at the
Zurich Open, beating Eleni Daniilidou 6-4 4-6 6-3 in a match that had 13
breaks of serve in its 29 games.
"I've been struggling a little bit in the last few months," Mauresmo said in
an on-court interview, and the match testified to her struggle for form after
an appendix operation in March. She came to Zurich having lost her previous
two first rounds (to Elena Dementieva and Vera Zvonareva), but was
adventurous against the Greek, coming to the net whenever possible. Though
she posted 56 unforced errors, she also outscored Daniilidou in the winners
department, and sealed the match with an ace.
Mauresmo now plays Alona Bondarenko, the conqueror of Switzerland's Timea
Bacsinszky, in the second round.
