[Fed Cup] 日本 vs 法國 結果
France keeps its elite spot
Former Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo cruised to a 61
64 victory over Japan’s Ai Sugiyama in the first reverse singles match on
Sunday to clinch their Fed Cup by Paribas World Group Playoff tie 3-0 for
France at Ariake Colosseum.
Relying on a sweeping forehand and slicing backhand, Mauresmo took just 1 hour
and 15 minutes to dispatch Sugiyama and assure France of remaining in the World
Group in 2009.
France came into the tie with Japan having lost their World Group tie to China
3-2 in Beijing in February.
Japan, which beat Croatia 4-1 in Miki, Hyogo Prefecture, to earn the shot at
promotion to the World Group, is relegated to World Group II again next year
with the defeat.
Mauresmo in complete control
“I felt like I had control of the match from the beginning,” Mauresmo said.
“I could read her balls well and played strongly from the baseline.”
Mauresmo, who routed Ayumi Morita 60 62 in their opening singles match on
Saturday, broke Sugiyama in the second game of the opening set after the
Japanese fought off four break points. Sugiyama held serve in the fourth game
to cut Mauresmo’s lead to 3-1, but the French No. 1 tore off the next three
games to take the set, winning the final one at love.
Sugiyama put up more of a fight in the second set, just as she did on Saturday
in a 61 75 defeat to French No. 2 Virginie Razzano, but Mauresmo’s combined
game of power and skill proved too much. Sugiyama withstood four break points
in the opening game of the second set before finally holding serve.
Mauresmo took the next game at love with a nice volley at the net, before breaking
Sugiyama to go up 2-1. Mauresmo then held serve to make it 3-1, but Sugiyama
then took her service game at love, broke back to make it 3-3, and won the next
game to lead 4-3.
French preperation the key
At this point it appeared that Mauresmo might be fatigued, but she clamped down
and won three straight games to seal the match. “I did not panic when she made
it 4-4 in the second set,” said Mauresmo. “She played some great shots to get
back into the set.”
Mauresmo said she dug in at this crucial point in the match and it made the
difference. “I pushed myself when it was 4-4,” she said. “Sugiyama is one of
the best in the world at returning shots, so I really tried to mix it up
against her.”
The French star won the eighth game at love, then broke Sugiyama with a nice
chip shot at the net on the fourth break point to go up 5-4, and locked up the
match and the tie by winning her service game at love.
Mauresmo, who is battling a cold, said that the French team’s arrival in Japan
last Sunday helped the team recover from its journey and get acclimated. “This
was very important,” she noted. “We prepared well all week and finally
started to feel better on Friday. It might have even been better if we had
arrived here last Saturday.”
In the fourth dead singles rubber, Virginie Razzano defeated Aiko Nakamura 64
64 and in the doubles, Ayumi Morita and Ai Sugiyama got a point back for Japan,
claiming victory over Alize Cornet and Nathalie Dechy 61 63.
