Q. First of all, what have you got to say about this match?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, frankly, I don't know what to say right now, because
there was nothing much on my side, apart from a few games in which I was
slightly more aggressive and not letting her play that game that much.
But I don't know if I lacked rigor in my intentions. I don't know if I let her
impose her style too much, because she has a typically Spanish style. It's
usually men playing like that, so she has a very long shot, but her balls were
not that fast.
So that's it. It's a bit difficult for me to analyze all this. And all I can
say is that I feel sorry about the way I played, especially from a tactical
standpoint.
Q. Apparently you had not many solutions. What was your tactics at the
beginning?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, even though I had never played her, I knew more or less
that what type of game she would produce. And when I said I missed the match,
it's because I knew that I should not have accepted to play these long rallies
because I know that this is something she's very good at.
But I should have done what I managed to do for a couple of games in the second
set: hit the ball earlier and play passing shots even if, in that case, my
percentage would have been slightly worse.
But the objective ?? this was my tactic before I got on the court, and I did
not go by this plan enough.
Q. In the second set you came to 4-3 with other intentions, apparently.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yes,I forgot about my intentions, and I let her take the lead.
I don't know what else I can say.
Q. I saw you play for the first time in 1995 against Nathalie Baudone, and I
followed your results here in Paris. My question is: What's wrong in Paris as
compared to other tournaments for you?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Clay. (laughter.) That's the first point.
Q. I had noticed.
AMELIE MAURESMO: There is also the Eiffel Tower.
Q. These are good answers, but maybe not the only reason.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, if you know the real answer, maybe I'd like to know
about it. (laughter.)
Q. Maybe we can talk about it together.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Oh, no, that's for a fact. We won't talk about it together.
But beyond just the surface, it's not just Paris. I've already missed matches
like that, whether here or elsewhere, with everything else, which I've been
worried about over the last few weeks, or even over the last few months.
Q. Are there any different approach for you when you come to Roland Garros, or
is there just a match that you missed?
AMELIE MAURESMO: No, it's just a match that I missed. I have not respected our
plan, our tactics. I've not had enough time to develop what I wanted to
implement, and there's nothing more I can add.
Q. Let's talk about your opponent, because she's somebody we don't know at all.
She qualified. She comes from qualification. She moves quite a lot and she doesn't
make that many mistakes, so it can't be easy to play.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, she has a typical game for clay. The perfect game for
clay.
Q. You have great experience. With regards to a possible change of tactics,
how do you explain you didn't manage to change your tactics?
AMELIE MAURESMO: I have no explanation for that. Well, I changed it, but over
too short a period of time. After I changed my style, because I was just
reacting to something else, and not because I was determined to do that. But
that's something I'll talk about with our Italian friend here.
Q. And wouldn't you say the number of matches you played played a great role?
AMELIE MAURESMO: I'm not even certain. Well, probably. Probably, because when
you've played enough matches you know how you are, you know how you play, and
you know what works.
So probably yes, but it's difficult to say this is true, this is absolutely
true.
Q. What's your mindset now knowing that you've been fighting for months to come
back to your traditional or your standard level? Are you disappointed you've
not managed to reach the level you wanted to reach?
AMELIE MAURESMO: No. What's disappointing is playing a match like this that I
totally missed, so I'm obviously disappointed, quite frustrated, and that's it.
Q. This tournament was also important for you to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Are you aware of this? Are you worried?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Right now, no. While it's true that the Olympic Games are
still an objective for me, I've not kept an eye on the ranking, et cetera. So
this is not something I'm aware of right now.
Right now this is not my top priority, even though I do want to take part in
the Olympic Games.
Q. Can you tell us what you're going to do in the coming days? What's your
agenda?
AMELIE MAURESMO: No. No. We said we would play the match with Fabrice Santoro,
so anything can happen. I don't know if I'll play it or not.
Then I'll start on grass, and I hope I'll have ?? my tennis will be better, and
I hope that from a physical standpoint I'll be okay.
