Amelie Mauresmo has advanced to the second round of Australian Open 2009 after
an impressive 6-4 6-3 win over Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
Speaking after the match, Mauresmo said she felt good and laid to rest any
queries about her fitness.
“I was physically good. That was … a concern for me in the last few days.
It's been going well today on the court,” she said.
The 2006 women’s singles champion was the first to master the swirling winds
and make her move, stealing the first game off her opponent.
Despite Govortsova’s persistence and clever placement of the ball, Mauresmo
was able to retain the break until the sixth game, when the Belarusian levelled
to bring the set back on serve.
Serving at 3-4, Mauresmo had committed 12 unforced errors to her opponent’s
five, which seemed to act as a wake-up call for the Frenchwoman.
The more experienced Mauresmo started mixing up her shots, and before long got
the break to lead 5-4.
She sealed the set on her first attempt with a 172km/h ace straight down the
middle.
Mauresmo pushed early in the second set, and in the first game she let two
chances to break slide. Again in the third game, she squandered an opportunity
to take the advantage.
Govortsova had no such trouble in the fourth game, when she required only one
of three break point opportunities to skip out to a 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, Mauresmo bit back in the very next game.
With some classy slices across the net and utilising her trademark one-handed
backhand, the 29-year-old won the next five games without too many problems.
“The conditions were a little tough, I think especially with the wind,”
Mauresmo conceded.
“I felt it was hard to produce some high level of tennis … but I’m
happy I went through this first match.”
Mauresmo also said she had some improvements to make on the back of a quiet
2008, and the motivation that saw her crowned as Australian Open champion
three years ago still existed.
“That’s the motivation for this year, being able to play some great matches at
a high level,” she said.
The No.20 seed will next play Elena Baltacha, who beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-1
6-4 on Court 10.
