[外電] Bass here, there ... everywhere in Dallas Mavericks' win

CHICAGO – With so much talk about the Mavericks' shooting guard position,
it seemed Brandon Bass was a forgotten man during the early part of the
preseason.
Not after Thursday night.
The backup big man had a couple of ferocious jams in the second quarter and
reminded everybody he's looking to build on the breakout season he had in
2007-08.
More Mavericks
Bass powered through the Chicago Bulls to spark the Mavericks' 110-102
victory at United Center.
Bass had 10 points in only 16 minutes of play. His strong performance was a
grand sight to coach Rick Carlisle, who experimented with Bass playing some
small forward against Chicago's Luol Deng.
Bass still figures to play more power forward and center. But he likes the
idea of getting time at small forward.
"He just threw me out there because I've never guarded small forwards who
come off screens," Bass said. "I got to work on it. I'll go play any
position. But playing the three [small forward] on defense, Dirk [Nowitzki]
will be playing it on offense."
Said Carlisle: "Playing him at three is something we'll continue to look at a
little bit here and there. It might be good for us, especially against bigger
teams."
The starters played the entire first quarter, when the lead mushroomed to
double figures. Carlisle went with the second unit for the entire second
quarter, then mixed and matched in the second half.
"The plan was to play two 12-minute games in the first and second," Carlisle
said. "We won both of them. It's hard to go 12 straight minutes playing this
way. We took an extra timeout to make sure we could get through it because
you get gassed."
The Mavericks play Milwaukee at LaCrosse, Wis., tonight. Jason Kidd will sit
out, and either J.J. Barea or Jason Terry will start at point guard.
Cuban's bid for Cubs: With the economy in complete flux, owner Mark Cuban
said before Thursday's game it stands to reason that his and other potential
buyers' bids for the Chicago Cubs may change.
And the longer the stock market and other financial indicators continue their
volatile ways, any sale of the major league team probably will be on hold,
Cuban said.
"I keep doing my part of it and doing our due diligence," he said. "But it
would be crazy [for owners] to say we're going to try to sell it right now,
absolutely crazy. The more expensive money is, the more expensive capital or
credit is, the less the price is going to end up being.
"Our people are talking to their people and coming up with different
structures. With things as volatile as they are now, it's hard to pinpoint
the right structure. I'm patient. I'm in no rush. But we keep trying to move
the ball forward."
There are five prospective buyers for the Cubs, all of whom have submitted
bids to Major League Baseball. Cuban's bid reportedly was the highest at $1.3
billion.
